So the Raiders management outsmarted themselves eh!!
Why would you sign a coach to a 3 yr contract yet insert a clause that either party could exit giving 3 mths notice after 1 yr?
You do that because you aint cashed up and wouldn't like to have to pay out a coach who didn't aim up. This way after a yr at any stage there after if he isn't the goods you can give him notice, punt him and not have a pay out.
Funny how if the guy does work out you have in fact given him an exit clause.
Henry's leaving because there is 5 yrs of security (and I bet there won't be an exit clause in this contract, lol) at much much higher income (the additional difference over the 5 yrs said to be between $350k and $450k. He's also going to a club that spends their full cap on the player market.
As Mongoose correctly pointed out above there is no loyalty in the game today, in any direction.
From what I understand Henry has been nothing but genuine, open and honesty with Don Furner through the last few weeks. He did want to stay and was looking for an extension that was at least similar to what was on offer. But the Raiders were only prepared to offer a 2 yr extension, at a lot less, and weren't prepared to move much.
If you've spent 15 yrs coaching, working your way up the ranks with your own family and work security longer term to consider and you have to weigh up the significant difference in deals then I think Henry's handling of this can be understood.
