Hindmarsh gets a start

April 5, 2005

The Canberra Raiders have wasted no time bringing Ian Hindmarsh back from injury, naming the second-rower in the starting team for Sunday’s clash against the Roosters at Canberra Stadium.

Hindmarsh will play his first match for the club this season, having sat out the first four rounds with a calf injury.

Former Kiwi international Tyran Smith has also been named in an extended 19-man squad. Smith is available for the first time in 2005, having served a five-match suspension flowing over from last year’s semi-final against the Roosters.

With injuries to forwards Ryan O’Hara (shoulder) and Alan Rothery (eye), Raiders coach Matt Elliott said the return of Hindmarsh and Smith was a blessing.

“Obviously Ian and Tyran haven’t had a lot of field time, apart from a few trial matches,” Elliott said. “But we’ve put a big emphasis on our rehabilitation programs this season, to make sure when our players do return from injury they’re fit and ready to go. It’s timely we have both those players back”

Centre Craig Frawley (quadriceps, calf) and utilility forward Alan Tongue (abdominal injury) have been named, but both will have to prove their fitness by Friday.

If Frawley is ruled out, winger Phil Graham is likely to push in to the centres and Matt Gafa will come into the starting team on the wing.

“I don’t want to be fiddling around with the line-up too late in the week,” Elliott said. “I want to make sure we get a good preparation as a unit in those last couple of training sessions. The Roosters are going to be our most formidable opponent so far this season.”

O’Hara, a 2004 NSW Origin prop, is expected to miss up to a month of football with a shoulder injury. Elliott has nominated in-form back-rower Kris Kahler to start in the front-row, leaving young Michael Weyman as an impact player off the bench.

“I don’t under-estimate the role our bench plays for us in matches,” Elliott said. “Our bench has been outstanding in the first three matches and I think Mick brings us something extra when he comes on.

“A guy who hasn’t been getting much recognition outside the club is our other prop Troy Thompson. He’s been close to the pick of our forwards in the first three games.”

Kahler at prop? What is Elliot thinking? The starting team lacks size severely, where's Cross when we need him!

Looks like Chalky is on standby for Frawls and Smith for Tongue
id expect that if Frawley pulls out Graham into centre and Chalk on the wing

only just noticed Kahler at prop
surely Adamson to prop and Kahler in the 2nd row is a better option

To be honest I don't think with our roster and style it matters what number those guys have on their backs when they run out. Hopefully Tyran has a good game if he gets a run as he adds a bit of size (as long as he doesn't get sent off in the first few minutes that is).

If it doesnt matter why not name the team how they will play

make no mistakes, Kahler will be taking first hit ups and playing the prop role, for me Adamson has more size and aggression to play the role, Morley would struggle to put a hit on Adamson where as if he cops Kahler a good one it could put Kahler in his shell, good to see Miller on the bench also

Kahler is a big unit for sure (100kg according to www.raiders.com.au) and I have no problems seeing him as starting prop. I have been very happy with his form so far this year. Wasn't he named on the bench before starting in the first game of the season? Then he retained that starting spot the next two weeks and is now named to start as prop. Those are two steps up in the space of 4 weeks - not bad.

yep good point titties but im just saying that for pure size and intimidation factors maybe we'd be better off with Adamson at Prop and Kahler playing where he's been killing it - 2nd row

yea true that, but my thinking was that if one had to be pushed to prop id prefer it to be Adamson, mainly to sort of protect Kahlers inexperience, he maybe easily intimidated by Morely who likes to make his presence well know

Im sure Kahler will do a fine job so its not really a big thing so meh

I don't like seeing Kahler play prop at all. In fact, I think one of the reasons he was less than impressive in 2004 was because he was in the front row. It's not a matter of body mass, titties, it's a matter of body structure, and more importantly, style of play.

Kahler has been playing up the middle in the first three weeks anyway, with Adamson playing your modern-day, 2nd row channel 2 or 3 off the ruck. I for one have confidence in Kahler vs an intimidating Rorters pack - he has been smashed good and proper a few times this year and that hasn't stopped him one iota. In fact, he's ensured it's been dealt right back on some occasions. :D

A good side named by Elliot IMO, although D. Howell still worries me. I can understand the 'ain't broke don't fix it' approach but for me he is completely bloody ineffective, and offers far less than what Marshall Chalk showed late last year.

if we want to match forward then miller is a must.

he was fantastic in the tryals, and I have no doubt he will prove himself in the first grade side against the roosters

Bingo.

For the second time this year, we have two props on the bench in Weyman AND Miller, which will allow Kahler to move to the 2nd row if need be. I agree in that Kahler has been acting like a third prop anyway, I don't think this will disadvantage whatsoever.

Adamson needs to be out wide, creating havoc on the fringes. Moving him to prop would be stupid.

This is an interesting topic!

Krisman, you are right about body size not being enough - but it is important. The big thing for me is that Elliot has shown faith in Kahler and that is very important. If he makes the step up to prop as well as he made the step up from bench to starting, he could be one of our best IMO.

It is a hard decision to make, though, regarding which one steps into the front row. It seems to me like we are expecting them to be less effective when they switch to the front row. If that was the case, I would move the less effective player to prop so that the other remains as effective. But having said that, I think both Adamson and Kahler would do a great job at prop so I have no concerns.

I like Kahler @ prop. He's a big lad and he is pretty mobile. Thats the new modern frontrower. Great leg speed is important. Just as long as Tryan Smith doesn't play i'll be happy. He's just garbage and can't be physical yet disciplined at the same time.
