News Flash

I've just had meeting with HOFA's board members.

Anything after the full time whistle in the Grand Final is eligible for the 2006 HOFA's .

The people have spoken and the board are thankful for their support and input.

Thanks, Carch.
(assistant to the HOFA's travelling secretary)

Sensational news from the committee. :)

My eyes reveal no sig at all carch.

However, I have visited the blog via the link and it's safely bookmarked for the future.

Kudos to the HOFA committee and the travelling secretary.

Gower's submission for the HOFA is very impressive in my opinion, especially with the continual denials of property damage etc.. He still hasn't lost his touch from over the years.

Gower is even more worthy of nomination in my eyes, for the mere fact he is up for groping a chick, and has risked, not only another HOF nomination, but losing a sort the calibre of lady luck !

Speaking of whom, will Lady Luck be following "anyone" to Toyota this year?

The impressiveness in your opinion has nothing to do with his willingness to walk around buck naked, does it Wittyfan? ;-)

I've only just in after a night on the tiles.

The Gower story has taken a big turn....
Apparently he has been accused of hassling Junior Pierce's 17 year old daughter.

stay tuned.

 Actually, I don't rate Gower that much. Still, players can't seem to keep their clothes on anymore, whether it be for calendars or during drunken stupors.

But never underestimate the mastery of Gower. I had a feeling there was more to the story than what was initially published.

Tim Smith would be pleased his manhandling of a non-Parramatta fan is now buried elsewhere.

This effort from Gowie is gonna be hard to top...

It's got it all...Grog, golf, damage to property, nudity, and of course the big one...Groping the daughter of a legend.

All this from a bloke who got punted from the Aussie team back in '98 for getting his schlong out in the Coogee Bay Hotel...Gold medal effort!

Just for those without the paper...

Stars in showdown
By JEFF DUNNE

December 22, 2005

LEAGUE star Wayne Pearce confronted Craig Gower yesterday morning - hours after the Penrith captain allegedly harassed his 17-year-old daughter.

The incident was part of an alleged drunken spree of bad behaviour by the Test strongman during an all-star golf tournament.

Gower, 27, was playing in this week's Jack Newton Celebrity Golf Tournament at Peregian Springs Golf Course on the Sunshine Coast - which coincided with his buck's celebrations.

The controversial Panther is due to marry long-time girlfriend Amanda Flynn in three weeks. She is a former cheerleader of the year and regular Footy Show guest.

Penrith Football Club last night said it had launched an investigation into Gower's behaviour.

He is accused of throwing a knife at other guests during Wednesday's presentation dinner, from which he was then ejected.

He allegedly then went to a bar and harassed Pearce's daughter as well as the partner of a high-profile journalist.

Earlier he was accused of turning up to the tournament drunk, damaging a golf cart and being nude at the resort.

If Penrith decides he is guilty of the accusations, Gower could lose his captaincy and face a heavy fine - with the prospect of further punishment from the NRL.

Footy veteran Pearce offered "no comment" when contacted over the incident last night.

Jack Newton issued a statement saying: "Craig Gower probably crossed the line on one occasion and has instigated a media circus around what are essentially unsubstantiated allegations."

Gower defended himself in the same statement, adding: "Everyone comes up here to have a good time and relax before we get back into training in the new year.

"I'm proud to support what Jack's tournament stands for but I am disappointed that one night on the drink with a few mates has led to these absurd rumours."

On Tuesday Gower responded to claims he was drunk after turning up with a beer in his hand to play the first round of the golf tournament on the Monday.

He said at the time: "I'm up here to have a good time and that's it. What, I can't go out and enjoy myself? At the end of the day I am a normal bloke. I'm no better than anybody else.

"As long as I respect others, that's the main thing."

Gower's manager Greg Willett defended his client last night.

"He denies it, he says that's not how it was. I can only vouch for his character," Mr Willett said.

"It was his buck's week, everyone was buying him beers, he had two days of the buck's party and things like that."

"He gave all his testimonial money to the Panthers on the Prowl program (a children's charity). He's a great role model."

Penrith general manager Mick Leary has already started the investigation and said the matter would be referred to the club board. The National Rugby League has also asked for a report. No criminal charges have been laid.

Buck's week?

How much did he scoff down?

Yeah, I know Wittyfan...

Admirable excuse, but under the HOFA guidelines the ONLY players who are granted immunity for inclusion are blokes from the GF-winning side who play up in the week immediately following the Premiership decider of that given year.

Bucks nights are no excuse!

this is pure platinum...
I'll need to get a ruling on this bucks week thing though.

I read he threw a knife at other diners at some charity dinner and was chucked out!

Come on Carch...There is a little bit of mitigation for a Bucks Week, but it is not worthy of an exemption!

This is from the SMH website today:

Claims Penrith star Gower manhandled Test great's daughter

December 22, 2005

PENRITH halfback Craig Gower is at the centre of another alcohol-fuelled incident involving rugby league players, with allegations the Test footballer manhandled the daughter of former great Wayne Pearce after a charity golf event.

Gower was at the presentation dinner for the Jack Newton Celebrity Golf Classic on the Sunshine Coast when the incident reportedly occurred.

The Nine Network reported that the 27-year-old had manhandled the woman and was later involved in separate heated altercations with both Pearce and the son of the former Test player and NSW captain. It was further alleged that Gower - who was thrown out of the Australian rugby league team for exposing himself to a tourist in 1999 and fined $3000 for breaking a NSW team curfew last year - was kicked out of the official function, and had walked around the resort naked and crashed a golf cart.

Gower did not return calls yesterday but on Tuesday he strenuously denied any wrongdoing. "I'm up here to have a good time and that's it. What, I can't go out and enjoy myself?" he said. "At the end of the day, I am a normal bloke. I'm no better than anybody else. As long as I respect others, that's the main thing."

His position had altered yesterday, admitting in a statement he had pushed the boundaries on Monday night.

In the same statement, tournament host Jack Newton said "unfortunately Craig Gower probably crossed the line on one occasion" but described the allegations as unsubstantiated.

Alcohol abuse in league has come under the microscope recently, with former Australia coach Wayne Bennett speaking out about binge drinking's affect on the NRL last week.

"I'm sick of the drunks and I'm sick of our game being dragged through every media outlet in the country every time some guy behaves badly," Bennett said.

Nine's footage showed golf event MC, Billy J Smith, asking Gower about alcohol on the recent Kangaroos tour to Great Britain and France. "What about this drinking they reckon has been happening over there?" Smith asked. Gower's first words were censored and he continued: "I'm just trying to get into it now."

Penrith football manager Mick Leary said the club would conduct a full investigation into the alleged incidents and would have a finding by year's end.

"Put it this way - my holidays are gone," Leary said. "I will put recommendations to the Panthers board for their final decision."

Leary would not confirm if Gower would be sacked if some or all of the allegations proved correct but he made it clear that even if the player was on a break, he was still representing the club.

"They have an NRL contract and I believe they are then representing their club and the NRL for that period of time," Leary said. "It's like with any business. When is your down time, when is your free time? I suppose you've got plenty of it as long as you don't go and run out and do something stupid with it."

The NRL last night backed Penrith's investigation, while Gower's manager Greg Willett said he was a "great role model".

"He just denies it. He said that's not how it was. I can only vouch for his character," Willett said. "It was his bucks night. Everyone was buying him beers and that, he had two days of a bucks party and things like that."

Bennett, who resigned as Australia coach earlier this month, believes the drinking culture in league is destroying the game.
