JOSH Hoffman has staved off a challenge from Queensland Origin star Justin Hodges to clinch the Broncos' No.1 jumper for the club's premiership opener against Manly. The Courier-Mail can reveal Hoffman will be given first crack at the fullback spot, with the New Zealand Test custodian expected to launch his 2013 campaign in Brisbane's second trial against the Titans on February 16.
The battle for the coveted No.1 jumper intensified in November when Hodges, a three-quarter fixture on Brisbane's right side, made the surprise admission he was eyeing a possible switch to the backfield this season.
Hoffman's iron-clad grip on the fullback spot slipped on the eve of last year's finals when the hard-running Kiwi was axed by coach Anthony Griffin for arriving late to training.
As part of his penance, Hoffman made his return via the wing.

But an impressive pre-season has convinced Griffin to install the Mackay junior as his first-choice fullback for 2013.The Broncos coach has not, however, ruled out deploying Hodges at fullback in a clear sign Hoffman cannot afford the disciplinary lapse that temporarily cost him an NRL spot last season.
"He is training well Josh, he will get an opportunity to trial at fullback," Griffin said.
"He has trained well in the off-season like everyone has.
"He has got himself into good shape so it will be good to see how he goes in the trials."
Hoffman recently admitted that he finished last season feeling "fat and sluggish" and that Hodges' interest in moving to fullback had blindsided him.
"He kept it quiet actually," Hoffman said of Hodges' desire to wear the No.1 jumper.
"It came out in the paper and I thought 'wow, I need to go hard'.
I'm not sure about this. I would've liked to have seen Hodgos potential to carve up from the back ala Inglis.

See you in 2014.

But seriously, I don't understand it. The Broncos looked the best in attack when Norman was at fullback. Go watch the Bulldogs first half. The threat of a fullback with ball playing skills freezes the defense and then our halves can either go flat to the 2nd rower or out the back to fullback. The two tries we scored were probably the best 2 tries of the year. And in the final loss to the Cowboys Hook rolls the dice and puts Hodges at fullback and lo and behold he throws a good pass to get us on the outside and we score in the left corner.

Even the quotes in the article piss me off.

'I was fat and sluggish'. You're a fullback. What the hell is wrong with you?

'It came out in the paper (about Hodges wanting his spot) and I thought 'wow, I need to go hard.'' You're in the bottom 4 fullbacks in the comp coming off a terrible season. And you only decide to 'go hard' now when you're spot might be in danger. This guy thinks must think he's a Lockyer or Hunt who owns the position or something.

Watch him have a great start to the season, then start slacking in round 8-9..He knows Hook has faith in his players, so will build just enough to stay in the side the whole year.

He just doesn't seem to have the competative edge all the good fullbacks seem to have, Slater, Stewart, Hayne, Barba, Bowen, Inglis all have that drive while Hoffman only works when his position is on the line.

Was really looking forward to Hodges running around in the number 1 jersey.

Safest option we've got.

Goes without saying, needs to belt up. Those performances at the back end weren't even QCup standard.

Fullbacks better than Hoffman

Slater
Inglis
Hayne
Barba
Bowen
Stewart
Minichiello
Dugan
Boyd
Zillman

Add in guys that play well when at fullback Gordon, Hodges, B.Morris, Merrit. I left out Norman just not to start a shit fight.

Hoffman needs to be strapped to a chair and made to watch Hunt's old games from now til the season starts..Maybe he'll do something other than run in a straight line when he gets the ball.

watching the game, that first try was beautiful ! we are going to miss a hard running second rower like te'o. i think glenn is a bit bigger so hopefully we have gillett left hand side, glenn right. maybe hunt should get the nod over wallace, but i doubt it will happen, wallace has a better kicking game than hunt.

Even at his best he is not good enough. The fullback of today has to have play making skills something Hoffman has never showed to have.

Hoffman has set up opportunities in the past, it just isn't his strong suit. He'll never be Karmichael, but it wouldn't take too much work for him to at least reach Slater's level (can't stress this enough, as a playmaker).

Needs to work on his overall game though. He really doesn't seem valuable at all inside the opposition's half unless they're doing that outside inside ball which works like 20% of the time.

The coach has destroy his career. Telling him to stack on the weight so they could use him as battering ram.

If he can get back to 2010 form, then fine. But after what we saw in 2012, it's hard to imagine...
