Having just listened to the Hottest 100 in alphabetical order over the past four hours, I can say I have never listened to a greater load of shit in my life. To shorten the agony, thanks to the scan and skip buttons on my PVR.

The only redeeming songs were those by the Arctic Monkeys, one by Kanye West  and one or two others.

Even Queens of the Stone Age sounded like they had been diluted a million times.

And for those who laud London Grammar, FMD! The vocalist sounds like a bad hybrid of Alison Moyet and Dido. Tracey Thorne from Everything But The Girl makes the whole lot of them sound like strangled sewer rats.

A lot of "boring" music in that countdown. Why are bands so bland these days?

I think this is why I predominantly listen to metal these days. It's either that or my favourite bands from the 90s mostly.

I think it's telling when the BDO and Soundwave festivals are headlined by bands who were at their peak 15 - 20 years ago (Pearl Jam, RHCP, Soundgarden, Metallica, Linkin Park, Green Day, Stone Temple Pilots, Korn, Tool, System of a Down, Rammstein).

The BDOs in the 90s were headlined by bands that were big at the time.

True words there Walt.

I attended BDOs for 11 years straight, starting in 1997, and saw every favourite band I ever wanted to see. After 2005, the BDO rot set in and the Hottest 100 followed suite.

Have a look at the Hottest 100's Number Ones for the past 10 years.

Vance Joy
Macklemore
Goyte
Angus and Julia Stone
Mumford and Sons
Kings of Leon
Muse
Augie March
Bernard Fanning
Franz Ferdinand

With the exception of Muse and Franz Ferdinand, the rest are just limp wristed shit.

The best festival this country ever had, in terms of band lineup, was Alternative Nation in 1995.

Nothing else has come close.

Just looked it up. That is an awesome line-up. Would have loved to have seen Faith No More live.

I was centre front row of stage right for the entire day.

Most memorable part of the day was being struck by a flying guitar, thrown by one of the dudes from Live after someone apparently hit him with a rock earlier in the show.

All of the bands (well, with the exception of Lou Reed) were in their prime too. RHCP and STP were supposed to headline but pulled out, but I didn't really miss them.

Triple J hottest 100 is full of mostly disposable electronic and indie music. Most of these artist you will not hear from ever again imo.

Also, while I don't mind the Arctic Monkeys, how does AM manage 3 songs in the top 20? I don't even think their debut album, which is miles better had 3 songs in the top 20. Just shows what kind of awful state mainstream guitar music is in.

Yep, I think Lorde will fade away over the next year or so and will only be seen in RSLs. Remember Kate Miller-Heidke?

The best thing I can say about the sort of music Triple J play these days is that sometimes it's good background music. Nothing exciting about it all.

To be fair to Lorde, she did hit #1 in the US and win 2 Grammys, whereas Kate Miller-Heidke had one big hit because of Neighbours and put on one of the worst live performances I've ever had the displeasure to sit through.
