How to destroy Rugby League...

A lot of people forget that Arko and Qualye were planning to cut teams too (their number was 14)...

The only difference between what they were planning and what actually happened between 1995-2000 was that it cost a whole lot more to get there and there was no one managing which teams were culled.

But the fact is, cutting or merging half a dozen teams was inevitable even without SL...

Their plan was natural attrition.

Gus has carefully built Penriff back into a nothing, after starting with a nothing- by judiciously hiring & firing people willy nilly & spotting medicority & backing it.

Wayne has done nothng but wreck places for the last decade, NRL clubs. national teams, even entire concepts like Great Britain.

One has a huge conflict of interest as he has spent his life in the pocket of the games main FTA broadcaster, one is decade past his use by date has never put the game above his own agenda.

Piss off Joey.

Natural attrition is exactly what we got after the SL truce (with the exception of Melbourne Storm being planned and guaranteed a spot).

But the Arko/Quayle plan was definitely to drive the number of teams down of the level we actually got in 2000

Gus built an academy that is regarded as the best there is. He restarted the junior pathways, and has set up a system to get the cream of the western division juniors to be part of the Panthers. Penrith is now disappointed when they miss the finals, instead of rejoicing at the occasional finals appearance. He made some bad decisions and some good ones, but Panthers are a better club for his time there.

Wayne Bennett is past his use by date, and devastates the clubs he has been at. Souths will learn that soon enough.

This is exactly right. When Gould took on the Penrith job they were a complete rabble in every way shape and form. They are now very financially strong, have strong junior systems and a competitive team. Gould also rebuilt the Roosters from scratch in the mid 90's. He knows what he is doing.

not that I have anything against Penrith, they are fine as a club but I would laugh so hard if they are one of the clubs that perish after COVID-19

They'll only go if the leagues club throw them under the bus, and the leagues club are constitutionally bound to support the football club.

Gus, despite all of his pissing and moaning about how poorly run the NRL is, says he wouldn't take the CEO job if it was offered to him. Ok then Gus, shut the f#@k up and stop moaning about the game if you aren't prepared to step up and try to change things.

It is easy to whinge and throw bombs from the outside.

But he would never risk actually having power and responsible. He would be found out so fast

Reminds me of uncle wayne at the preseason conferences/think tank sessions for the entire competition. Would constantly not turn up and then spend the season whinging about things that he might have had a chance to do something about before it started.

If he cant use "its origins fault" to any issues then he is screwed in any higher up position

Gould running the nrl?
Yeah right.
I’m sure he thinks he can do it but it’s pure delusion

Can't happen. 99% of people using social media would 'lose their voice'.

This is Gus's story, but I'm not so sure. It's a saying of Gould's that things are never either as good or as bad as they are painted. I think that might be the case here.

Not quite natural attrition.
The Chargers were booted, because the Broncos wanted the whole SEQ to themselves, despite the fact they were one of the few clubs to make a profit.

Ummm.......no it wasn't.

News Ltd came up with a number (14) that the game could fund after three years of the game driving itself financially into the ground. It was at it's lowest ever point. sponsor didn't want to touch it, supporters were walking away, etc etc

Had News Ltd not got involved and the game transitioned to pay TV in a positive manner for the game over the years it would have grown and grown instead it went backwards 20 years.

Natural attrition is not killing off 7 clubs overnight. An action which caused massive damage to the games fabric.

I believe given the current TV deals, better stadiums, professional management, private investors etc clubs like Balmain and North Sydney could easily survive today.

If Souths can survive and they were on their knees for years, Balmain could also.

Its a real shame there wasn't an appetite and resources to go with a 20 team national comp in 1998. Some Sydney mergers, the national clubs, 4 Qland clubs. If we could have found a way to maintain that, the game would be in an amazing position now.

We did have 4 qld clubs but the broncos wanted a monopoly and destroyed it. Wanted the cowboys booted as well
