Got to remember folks that the club is more than just the NRL side.
Gould basically destroyed the junior reps. Gone from the benchmark to not always making the 8

One team missed the finals last year, and that was due to a stupid anomaly in the draw. There is now a defined pathway with the best academy in the world.

The premier competition in Australia should’ve been created in 1988, 14 team competition with four QLD Cup teams joining a 10 team NSW competition with Auckland, Melbourne, NQ and Perth added before 2000

Yep, the perfect way to cut teams is not by cutting the but by creating an entirely new comp above the present ones that only a few clubs are invited into. The problem is that this can only really be justified by the blending of 2 or more competitions.....

1988 blending the QRL/BRL/NSWRL into a National comp would have been the perfect time for this. Now there just arent any comps strong enough nearby to justify this.

If there was a strong NZ or Indonesia comp ready to combine with, we could do it today. But short of that, i just dont see any full structural changes happening

It was still the NSWRL in '88. Even the Broncos were regarded as a NSW club.

It was the SL war that destroyed expansion in the first instance, with its explosion of player payments. This happened once again in the last decade, a time when Perth and Brisbane 2 could have re-entered the league. It would have to have been at the expense of Sydney teams though, as player salaries had again exploded, and the game didn't have the stomach to kick teams out.

Expansion isnt the issue. It is reducing the number if Sysney clubs and expanding the territory of the remaining clubs...

Bringing new clubs in is easy. Finding an excuse to cut existing teams it the challenges
