How To Maintain the Rage in 2019 and Beyond

There's no doubt that this years squad has a "bee in its bonnet" and are going out of their way to prove to everyone that they won't run out of steam in 2018 like last few years - the chorus is being led by JDB, FRIZELL, Sims, Nightingale and WIDDOP who are really playing with a lot of purpose and gusto - all these players have all been part of the clubs past failures and have felt the hurt and embarrassment which is driving them enough so that it seems that this effort at least this year will take us pretty close to a grand final dance.. My thoughts are though - how can we become a better team next year and where cAn we improve to ensure we have continued success in coming years.. These are my thoughts.
Backline:
This is one area we can definitely improve dramatically - We will definitely need to sign a strike winger to replace Nightingale unless we have Lomax come through or push out MANN to the wing. I really like Anthony Donn from GC if we had to go for a winger.

I would really like to see Lomax brought into the starting line up somewhere but can't see Aitken being pushed out.

I would also like to see Field brought through and utilised as a utility weapon to add some speed around the ruck especially during latter parts of halves - like a Phil Blake type of role but this only happens if MANN is moved to the wing.

Halves:
We are set for the next 4 years

Forwards
We will need a starting prop as I think Grahams role from next year onwards will be more of player coming on to lift the energy - I would like to see LAM kept to become a starting prop along w Vaughan.
We then just need another first grade quality prop to come on as a tandem w Graham after 25m to ensure we have continued energy through our forwards.

I'm not convinced we are covered in the back row beyond Sims, Frizell and JDB - there's a huge gap in class when you look at their immediate replacements (Sele, Host , Luciano) - I think we need a THOMPSON type of 2nd rower coming off the bench - a player w experience and can offer impact.

So in summary I think to ensure we have a competitive team pushing for a top 4 spot from 2019 onwards we will need to sign most definitely

2nd rower
Prop
And potentially a speedy winger.

We are building nicely to having a top 4 team for the next few years ...

I think the backline is fine and no need to buy anybody at all. You have Mann, Lomax, Field, Garick, etc. Mann and Lomax are better than most available players out there imo.

Dufty has taken off no reason why the others won't who were also impressive in the juniors. Look at the Raiders. They bought Covic which was an unknown player and he has been great. Tigers got Masters in the centres. I just think there are plenty of good backs coming through to invest in someone elses juniors.

I will honestly be happy if Saints can keep this group together for a while as they will bring some consistency and possibly finals footy for many years.

1 guy I would like Dragons to duy is that Asiata guy in Cowboys who can be brilliant off the bench and would add something. He can play anywhere in the pack and as a half. Great utility value.

Saints also probably need a backup hooker as if they lose McInness to injury have no experienced hooker.

Positive start.

Need to keep it up before I become too excited. Years of pain can make one a little sceptical. :) .

Overall a very good squad. Needs some polish in the backline to be a contender.

Agree with you to a degree mickylane , but a long , long way to go matey . However it's great for the morale of the team to get off to a flying start and all credit to them for sweeping all ( but 1 ) before them .
Most pleased for the supporters and also dare I say the coach our Mary too . Let's get Melbourne out of the way and then we will truly know where the Dragons are going in 2018 .

Personnel is so important, and this is what makes the difference this year. Not just players with correct skills, but players with a team first attitude. That’s why we’re going so well.

Consider the players last year who were in the middle of contract disputes effectively holding their clubs to ransom with their salary demands.

Tedesco, Woods, Moses for the Tigers, Dugan for us. None of their teams are going great at the moment. Parra and Dogs just woeful, and the Sharks and. Roosters ordinary as well. That’s because none of those guys have proven to put their team first.

We are so much better than all those teams as Millward has put together a squad with no dickheads and a team first attitude, all playing for each other. James Graham, Ben Hunt, Friz, Nighty, JDB, Vaughan etc all team players and stand up guys. I guarantee none of our squad will ever miss buses or be pissed in Origin camp.

That’s the key to success for this year and beyond.

Lol we’ve not won anything this year outside of ‘April Premiers’...let’s maintain the rage for 2018 first!

As for next year - if we lose Ah Mau without replacing him, it’s going to be hard to maintain anything.

Shannon Boyd looks like he wants out. What is the opinion of him. He is still young and I thought he was impressive in today’s game. We are apparently looking at him.
Thoughts?
