How would you advertise the game?

I was browsing YouTube today for motivational video's etc, pre-game speeches to try and find some inspiration for my coaching techniques, and I basically came across these series of Nike Commercials with Michael Jordon that I just thought were fantastic.

It basically got me thinking of how you could change it to model it on the NRL to use for 1 minute promo ad's to play during games/peak times, that not only promote the game but also a sponsor etc...to draw increased revenue.

This sponsorship would be through the NRL and not the clubs therefore any monies earned will be outside the salary cap etc..

But that's not the point, the point is these ad's. I've chosen 3 so far, just to make an example.

This ad - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sOT6DP_zQc&feature=quicklist With the tag line "What does your game say"

The words it display's during the clips are:
1. Get up, 2. Elevate, 3. Touch, 4. What if?...It Happened, 5. Hustle, 6. Finish, 7. Concentrate, 8. Strive, 9. Fight, 10. Achieve, 11. Triumph

Closing with - What does your game say

Now applying this to the NRL we could use the following clips:

1. Get up - Clip of player's being lifted when scoring a try
2. Elevate - Clip of Israel Folau from Origin last year climbing above Quinn.
3. Touch - Clip from 2005 Grand Final with Marshall flicking to Richards
4. What if?...It Happened - Richards scoring in the corner
5. Hustle - Sattler's tackle from 2003 grand final
6. Finish - Any number of great finishes
7. Concentrate - Hazem lining up a goal from the sideline
8. Strive - Inglis fending off Turner and Gasnier from last years origin
9. Fight - Petero or some other forwards hit up taking 2-3 player's with him
10. Achieve - Scoring the last try in a grand final...match winning try etc..
11. Triumph - Showing recent team's grand final photo

Now obviously rough, but I think it'd be a good representation of the game...and I think the tagline is fantastic. Obviously you could change the words etc...but principle there.

I'll put the next 2 in the next 2 posts...but this lends the question...how would you like to advertise our game?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-EyRUgp9Mk&feature=quicklist - Maybe Nike Ad

Probably the best ad i've seen on the Nike campaign...

The words:

"Maybe its my fault
Maybe I led you to believe it was easy, when it wasn't
Maybe I make you think my highlights started at the free-throw line and not at the gym
Maybe I make you think every shot I took, was a game winner
That my game was built on flash, and not fire
Maybe its my fault that you didn't see that Failure gave me strength, that my pain was my motivation.
Maybe I led you to believe that basketball was a god-given gift, and not something I worked for, every single day of my life.
Maybe I destroyed the game........Or maybe....you're just making excuses"

Tagline - Become Legendary

I love the principle behind the ad. Talking about the things that he thought led him to greatness...much alike when Ali would say his fights were won far away from the ring etc.

To adapt it to League we could use some of the game's great icons and players from the current era as well:

Wally Lewis - "Maybe it's my fault...Maybe I led you to believe it was easy, when it wasn't"
Andrew Johns - "Maybe I made you think my highlights started when I hit first grade, and not on the training paddock"
Hazem El Masri - "Maybe I made you think ever conversion I made, was a match winner"
Benji Marshall - "That my game is built on flash, and not fire"
Greg Inglis - "Maybe its my fault you didn't see that my failures gave me strength, that my pain was my motivation"
Darren Lockyer - "Maybe I led you to believe that Rugby League was a god-given gift, and not something I worked for, every single day of my life."
Wally Lewis and Andrew Johns to a bunch of Under 20's kids - "Maybe we destroyed the game...or maybe...you're just making excuses"

I don't remember who it was on this board but someone put this one up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX_5tzwVz3I I think its a fantastic ad. Great work by nike. That Michael Jordan ad is pretty good too, what is it with the US and really good sports ads?

Yeah I love watching that one as well!

I can see something like an Inglis spinning, palming off people etc on one side, then someone like a Kurt Gidley on the other...something like that.

There is a really good ad, which is a High School football ad!...called I Promise...I think its not too bad either. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0FUnmDWT-o&feature=related

Good quick, 30 second add.

MJ's words: "I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career, i've lost more than 300 games. 26 times i've been trusted to take the game winning shot...and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why....I succeed"

You could have someone like a Darren Lockyer doing the add saying:
I've made (insert number) many errors in my career, i've dropped (insert number), i've lost more than (Insert number) games. (insert number) i've been trusted to make the game winning play....and lost. I've failed over and over and over again in my career....and that is why....I succeed"

Not a great one...but still.

I think all these ads point out to me the massive crap factor the NRL seems to throw out year after year.

All these ads are really good and I also notice none of them have some rubbish pop song that no one will remember 3 months from now.

If the NRL produce a really good ad like any of those, might just have to eat my hat!

For some reason I can see this as a Promo for NYC Under 20's....

"Look me in the eyes, its ok if you're scared, so am I. But we're scared for different reasons....I'm scared of what I wont become...and your scared of what I could become...Look me in the eyes...I wont let myself end where i started, I wont let myself finish where I began, I know whats in me, even if you can't see it yet. Look me in the eyes...I have something more important than courage...I have patience...I will become...what I know I am" Tagline: Become Legendary

I guess the only way to fix it...is to show ways to improve it.

I got no drama's with their ad's with the pop songs...but why not have these ad's as the short ones to play around on other channels, and also on Radio...to promote an upcoming game...grand final..origin...test match...rivalry game...under 20's.

Nothing stopping the NRL putting out a few ad's at the same time...to show the human side of the player's...to show the work they put in...etc.

I think it'd give another dimension to our advertising campaigns.

I particlarly love the tagline...BECOME LEGENDARY...I think it appeals to adults viewing the games current generation of heroes, and also the kids who want to become the next generation of legends.

To be honest, I don't think the message in these ads would suit an Australian market. When I watch these ads, I think they've got tickets on themselves. The Australian tall poppy syndrome would be drawn out by such ads in my opinion to cut them down to size.

I think for an Australian market, the dialogue would have to be more humble, describing the difficulty of the journey, but also expressing the nerves and fear that they still feel.

Something like:

"Fear is what I feel when I make the first hit up in State of Origin"
"Pain is what I feel running up the sand hills at Cronulla"
"Elation is what I feel when I'm still playing in October"
"Pride is what I feel when a shy young kid wants to shake my hand"
"Inspired is what I felt when Wally Lewis shook this young kids hand"
"Motivation is what I feel, knowing that I'm not there yet"

Obviously I'm not marketing guru, but I think humility needs to come through rather than an "Aspire to be me" message.

Marketing is a massive problem in both codes of Rugby. The NRL seem to be adressing the issue the most, in comparison to other competitions, but it's still woefull.

There's so much possibility for League, we just need someone with genuine enthusiasm and ideas with some power in the game.

I mean can you imagine how much League would grow in popularity if it had promotion on the level of the NFL, and was marketed in a cool and youthful way.

Union and even League have very poor images internationally. And nothing seems be done to change that.

Someone like Russell Crowe could do wonders for the NRL with a little bit of power and money.

its fantastic

mistakes are how people truly learn.

but because we like to lie to ourselves, we often overlook it. its to real, its too hard to take.

we are bombarded by thousands of realities a day - cant take them all in, so we lie

i think the nrl should do an add like it...its hard hitting in the right spots, and inspirational.

i always liked the one with larry bird and MJ? where they're playing horse and making ridiculous shots. i've often thought it'd bea mad ad with say el masri and thruston where they're in an empty stadium having a shootout and kicking goals from halfway, from rebounds off advertising signs, from the top of the sfs etc

The NRl operates on peanuts and is governed by Monkeys, the problem lies there unfortunately.
