Hypothetical: Ryles under Bennett

Mod - pls move to St George. Cheers.
Creagh's comments last night on NRL on Fox about the differences between the 2009 Forward packs & previous years got me thinking.

How do you think Jason Ryles would be regarded if he had have been able to stay & play under W.B.?

Would he be a starter, an impact player off the bench, running around for Shellharbour, or one of the premier front-rowers in the NRL?

Brilliant

1. Bennett would get the support play organised to take advantage of his offloads
2. Bennett would get into his head with respect to discipline. Look at Hodges - At Roosters a trackhead ... At broncos under bennett a subdued trackhead ... At roosters under Henjack a trackhead deluxe

The down side is that we may have missed out on one maybe two of Weyman/Smith/Boyd/Costigan .. That would have sucked.

I would have loved to see both Gasnier & Ryles under Bennett. But if we still had either one we wouldn't have been able to pick up all the great purchases we've made. Costigan, Smith, Weyman, Boyd. Happy to see those 2 go in place of those 4.

Not quite. Bennett was still with us for 2007/08 and Hodges was at his dickhead-best over those 2 years.

I was watching NRL on Fox last night too and I gotta say...Ben Creagh needs a personality transplant. I seriously fell asleep watching him speak. Good player though...

And I'm pretty sure Gasnier & Ryles played under Bennett when we embarrassed the Kangaroos in 2005. They didn't go very well...

Ryles was a benchie in the 2005 Tri Nations under him, behind Civo and Price. He got a start in the final though, thanks to Price being injured. We all know how that ended up ...

I'd like to point out Ryles got the most Dally M points out of any prop, & didn't win prop of the Year. It was disgusting that Ryles didn't play Origin last year as well. Daley tried to tell us that no player get a line through their name. Who's that guy kidding.

Ryles would have been the first prop picked for all three matches for NSW and with Civoneceva unavailable would have been the other starting prop for Australia for the Four Nations.

Players like Ryles and Gaz were prime examples of what was wrong with the Dragons back then! I love the Dragons side now without greedy overrated players like them.

I have nothing against players going after the bling-bling. That's a bit harsh on Ryles though, from what I could make of things he wanted to stay, but was seemingly told to move along. That's what I made of it anyhow.

I watched a game the other week that Ryles and Thompson played in. No wonder I use to cringe every time they ran the ball up. Half of their offloads went to ground. They use to just chuck the ball out the back. Thank god they are gone.

I think they probably were part of the bad Dragons culture, although moreso Gasnier.

Player i would've loved to have seen under Bennett would be Barrett, I think he would've been supurb, considering he was a very good player for a long time under sh*thouse coaches (farrer, brown).

I would say that he would probably improve like pretty much everyone does under a good coach.

But since we are talking hypotheticals, I'd say he would of won the Dally M and then the Churchill Medal in a winning side.

Had a great last year though, no doubt.

Ryles would be starting. The Dragons wouldn't have bought Weyman if Ryles was staying. He would be an improved player. I recall last year Ryles was a big fan of Bennett and it was a bit of a surprise that he left the Dragons even though he knew Bennett would be coaching there next year. Money talks.

He didn't leave because he wanted more money, he left because he was making too much money (i.e. Bennett thought he was taking too much cap space)

Bennett doesn't believe in paying a prop $300-350k, so he was squeezed out. Ryles didn't go looking for more cash.

In any case, Ryles isn't the type of prop that Bennett likes anyway. He likes guys who just cart it up as hard as possible, Ryles tries to force too many offloads or play before the line, whether that would have changed under Bennett remains to be seen. Weyman is a much better fit for our club at the moment.
