Mate I grew up on that stuff. My four bands as a young teen were Van Halen, Def Leppard, Aerosmith and AC/DC.
Now, I'll never proclaim Leppard to be the greatest band of all time or even particulary good musicians (Clark aside). But they wrote some great tracks and Hysteria and Pyromania were superb. Adrenalize was pretty decent too.
Over-produced? Absolutely.
Spandex? Yep, not that that matters.
But they'e not sell-outs. They did what they did and never strayed.
Metallica - that's what you call a sell-out
Def Lep weren't untalented, I mean Steve, Phil could play a great guitar battle.
I could think of a hell lot worse rock acts then them, and besides just look at albums sold for Hysteria, very impressive for a rock group.
Hystetria the song is one of my favourite riffs, simple with a slight use of flange but he's chilling when driving.
They weren't over produced, bands today don't even come to the recordings together, now I think constitutes being over produced.
