I heard a rumour today...

G'day All,

I heard a rumour today which i have grave doubts of whether its true or not. It came from someone reasonably high up in a club. The rumour is as follows: "Denis Fitzgerald will very shortly be CEO of Blacktown Workers Club". I tried to pry further to find out if it meant he will be leaving Parra or if he would be doing this as a second job. I wasn't able to get any further info, sorry.

As i said, its something i was told but don't necessarily know whether it is correct or not. I would think that that would be a step backwards, unless he was running for a higher (Higher than a Club CEO) posting on the NRL/ARL/NSWRL boards?

Not sure what anyone makes of this.

Cheers BF

Blacktown Workers CLub Group seems to consist of three clubs - the original at Blacktown, the Sports Club on Reservoir Road, and Parramatta Workers at the old Masonic Hall site on George Street. I find it unlikely that Parra Leagues would be taking them over or that Denis could do it as a second job.

http://www.workersclub.com.au/

It's hard to gauge whether this club group is bigger or has a bigger membership etc than the Parra Leagues Group, and hence whether it would be a bigger job for Denis to take as a CEO. Parramatta recently closed one of the clubs in its group if I recall correctly, making the group a smaller concern than previously. And to the serious club industry/pokie minded CEO, Blacktown Workers has the advantage of not having to bleed millions to run an NRL team year on year....

I'm pretty sure that Denis will leave Parra at a time of his own choosing, regardless of the composition of any board.
I also see the move to securing two year terms for the football club the last plank of stability that a long-term CEO would be likely to put in place before leaving during such a two year term.

Denis' contract extension is usually taken care of prior to the election of new boards and is apparently done in two year blocks, so one can expect the discussions about his next contract have recently been had at the club....

I wish you luck with your rumour, it's a brave thing to come out and admit it when there is no source.
Reminds me of the time I heard a rumour a few months back that Michael Hagan wasn't going to be our coach this year and Daniel Anderson will be taking over. This was well before Hagan quit as well. Most people laughed and jeered but it seems we are all smiling now. :D

Whilst there are many that (justifiably) criticize Fitzy over his involvement with the football club, I am guessing that not many can accuse him of being a bad administrator of the Licensed Club. Perhaps he sees the BWC position as a safe haven until his retirement ?

At least he has stated its a rumour, and doesn't pretend that it's written in stone. Probably the most honest way to share something that you've heard without setting yourself for too bigger a fall if it doesn't eventuate...

Gees people still have their cranky Mondayitis hats on today don't they? ;-)

I would have thought that the Club is regarded as one of the most successful in NSW. Based on beer consumption and pokie revenue. No ? Happy to be corrected if I am wrong Ram.

Correct this Gronk...4 million in the hole this year alone...Oh and don't get me started on the squandered millions over the years i.e. Parramatta Power Soccer venture. Instead of planning for a rainy day as they always come like Tsunami's at times...but then again a good exec would know this and have planned for it, ay. ;-)

Interesting and thanks for the update. So which licensed clubs are doing well and maintained their revenues in this new tax environment ?

what fitzy doesnt talk about when he talks about the pokie tax is that the performance of the club as a whole as declined and revenue is down.

So you would say that notwithstanding the new pokie tax and the anti-smoking measures, that revenue is down across the board but way below that of a comparable club ? You can substantiate this ?
