As if he is going to vanish off the face of the earth.
Have a look at the footage of any of the games.Note the number of ex-QLD Origin players who are still fully involved at Origin time, though of course not in a playing role.
Do you really think that Darren Lockyer isn't going to throw himself into the motivation and strategy sides of contributing to another QLD win?
I know that Locky has said that he doesn't want to coach.I tend to think that what he is referring to is full-time coaching. He genuinely wants to spend time with his family.I feel certain that he wouldn't preclude contributing in some manner to next year's 3 Origin games. In other words, just because he isn't playing, don't think that QLD will be without his contribution. That raspy voice will be doing what he has always done for the team.Keeping them focused and providing leadership.
No more will injury diminish his contribution.Lockyer will be able to avail himself, unhindered by that.
Players of the caliber of a Darren Lockyer come along rarely in a lifetime.Given the towering figure that he is in the Game in general and Origin in particular,NSW fans are somehow convinced that this is the turning-point which they so desperately need.Well,if he is still there to provide tactical and inspirational support,I don't know that I would be quite so confident.
Heck,I wouldn't completely write-off the possibility that the guy running out to fulfill the role that Langer currently plays during the game,of relaying coaching instructions and passing-on a few of his own observations, couldn't be carried-out by Darren Lockyer. It's a great way of continuing his previous leadership role, and by having the time during the game to stand back and watch the things that one can't see when they are playing in the line,he may well be able to advise the team leaders about opportunities and weaknesses that he would otherwise not have had the time or vantage point to notice if he was participating.
His on-field presence may actually contribute tactic-wise during the game, better than they are currently succeeding(and the results for that as it stands now speak for themselves).
The presence of Allan Langer and Andrew Johns on the field for QLD and NSW respectively, shows that it is far from regarded by the elite players as a minor role.A keen observer would note that it is no accident that the men who involve themselves at that role during the game are the best playmakers that have ever played Origin.Lockyer is thus tailor made for that role.
Like I said, don't be surprised where Darren Lockyer will turn-up at Origin time. You may not have seen the last of him yet on the Origin field.
