I'll never forget where I was when I found out Joe Strummer died.

I had worked late the night before and was just starting to wake up and mum knocked on the door with a cuppa for me and she told me "someone from the Clash" died and straight away I thought of Topper Headon and mum said "no", think I might have thrown up Paul Simonon next and mum said no. I then asked "it wasn't Joe Strummer was it?" and mum said "Yep that's him."

I didn't want to leave my bed. I just curled up and lay their silently. I might have got up to put London Calling on the stereo but would have crawled straight back in to bed. I've met people who are old enough to remember when Elvis Presley died or when John Lennon was assassinated. Some of my friends are old enough to remember it themselves and in particular how upset their mum and dad were by it.

Finding out about Joe Stummer dying is on par with those for me... I remember going to see Ozomatli at the Corner a week or so later and they played the Clash's first album from start to finish before they came on. The Living End did the same thing with London Calling a couple of weeks later when I went to see them. I reckon there's a lot of people who can remember where they were when he died as well.

I can remember the following deaths:

Ayrton Senna: I was at home after school and an ABC News bulletin came on (it must have been because Richard Northcroft was the anchor) and the leading story was that Ayrton Senna had died. I expected to see the McLaren having a fiery crash but was surprised when I saw a white and blue car having a fast, but reasonably harmless looking, crash. My stepdad said "S**t!" out loud then apologised for swearing in front of me. Then when Mum came home from work the first thing I said to her at the door was "Did you hear about Senna?" and she said yes she had.

Princess Diana: It was the day of my 12th birthday party and Mum had gone down to the shops to get some more supplies. When she pulled up in the driveway she hopped out of the car and said "Princess Diana has been killed in a car accident." and I remember just going "Oh yeah." and strangely not feeling that surprised. Then when my friends began to show up they were already telling Di jokes.

Steve Irwin: I was actually at home watching telly and an ad came on 9 for a Steve Irwin tribute and I was thinking "Huh, what happened to him?" I don't remember when or where it was that I found out he had really died! I do remember being surprised that he hadn't been eaten by a croc.

Peter Brock: I was sitting on the platform at South Bank station going home from uni and reading the copy of 'The Catcher in the Rye' that I got for my 21st the week before and then Mum called me up and said "Peter Brocks' dead."

Michael Jackson: I was half asleep in my room then I heard my stepdad outside my door telling my sister that MJ had died. When I woke up I watched all the news reports and, disgraceful as I am, couldn't get the sound of him on South Park going "Stop it blankeeeet, that's ignoraaaaaaant!" out of my head.

I won't forget Brocks death as I was getting ready to propose to my now wife, she said yes then Manly lost to the knights in the finals and I threw a tantrum.

MJ I was in Melbourne for work and had a massive night out on the piss when my wife called at some early hour to tell me. I did not need to be woken to hear that news, think I grunted then hung up and went back to sleep.

Rowdy and i were in the car on the way back from a drive out to Coogee.. our CD finished so we just chucked the radio on and there was endless people calling saying how much they adored Steve Irwin and what they loved about him.

We flicked channels... cos, you know, boring! But then the next channel was talking about him, and the next, and the next, then we heard the words 'Stingray' and 'pierced' and we actually had to pull over to comprehend what we were hearing.

It wasn't a crocodile.. that's all i could say. How come it wasn't a crocodile?

I'm a big Michael Jackson fan, and it rocked me. Still does - I still can't believe it.

And watching the final address from his family and seeing his kids burst into tears...It just tore my heart out.

Then I saw "This Is It" and got goosebumps. It was amazing, and it really showed what he was like as a professional. His show was set to be AMAZING.

I know he will be forever tainted by the alleged things he did in his private life, but his work for charities, music and the entertainment industry itself will never be forgotten. He was unique, and I doubt we will ever see another entertainer of his calibre.




And to try to lift the feeling up here after that...I remember when we beat Cronulla 74-4 and The Peach got sent off. 'Twas unfair, but very, very funny.

I remember sitting on the 45m line, 2 rows back when my team kicked the Dogs out of the Semi's in 2007? So much fun!! We got so drunk and my Dad started yelling at the Dogs fans next to us because you know, apparently when your team wins you become invincible :roll: - i actually had to go over and flirt to make the peace (and i was just drunk enough to get away with it!)

I remember sitting RIGHT THERE when Shaun Timmins kicked that State of Origin Field Goal. The look of SHOCK on his face that it actually went through.. Amazing! LOVE SHAUNY!

I remember beating the Sharkies 74-4 in the rain, and the ground manager guy gave me the corner post right where Jamie scored all his tries. Pride and Joy

I don't think it was unfair. I think when you get 10 in the bin & walk off saying " F*cking cheat.... " it's gonna happen. :lol:

The best part of that match was when Shakrs went for a field goal 70 points down. :lol:

I remember being at Kogarah Oval, back when there was all those sacking of the Newcastle Mine workers, and my cousin convinced me to say "Go home and cry with the steelworkers", when I was about 6 years old and Saints were smashing Newcastle.

I remember Daryl Halligan throwing a forward pass to Jason Hetherington, and he scored, and we got knocked out of the semi's. I think that was the match a ref got a bucket of spit thrown at them. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I remember being at Leichardt Oval when Nathon Blacklock, scored a try after the siren to win us the match, and all the paper were going Blacklock for SoO. Then he didn't get picked.

September 11 2001 - I remember going to bed just before it happened, whilst I was in bed my home phone and mobile kept on ringing but could not be arsed getting up to answer them. It was a mate who was watching it all on tv trying to ring me. Then when my alarm went off and I noticed the mood was all serious on the radio and I could not figure out why, probably as I was half asleep, then I flicked on the TV and was absolutely shocked to see the footage. When I got into work most of the office spent hours in the boardroom watching tv to get the updates. I am not affected by a celebrity such as MJ or Diana dying or anything else like that as people die every day but this was completely different.

It's funny, I just sat a test for a paper on memory. Part of this course we studied a thing called "flashbulb memories" i.e. memories for monumental events we will never forget, memories that are still as clear as day to us now as they were when it happened.

They tested these memories after things like 9/11, and the Challenger explosion. They give people a questionnaire right after the event asking where they were, how they found out etc. while the memory is still clear. Then roughly 2 years later they test them on the exact same questions.

Something like 50% of them get the details wrong :lol: and i'm not talking about minor details either, some people get pretty massive details wrong. When you tell them this they don't believe it, their false memory is still clear as day, their confidence that their false memory is true is sky-high as well. Probably one of the funniest things I've studied. I'd be willing to bet a few of you are completely wrong, but none will know/admit it (which is the same thing i'd do if i'd written something down :lol. Just goes to show how funny memory can be.
