I’ll give credit to the ability of the Qld regime to cultivate the ‘greatness’ of their players(deservedly for some, but not all).
For some inexplicable reason this doesn’t seem to happen for NSW players when I think of the likes of Kenny, Clyde, Fittler etc.

I wonder if it could have been part of the formula that made origin so popular. Lewis was a fantastic all action player with alot of charisma which the media tapped into creating a villian for NSW and a hero for QLD. Kenny wasn't needed to fit this criteria thus didn't get anywhere the recognition Lewis received.

Going to high school in the 80’s in Sydney’s inner west meant we had an affiliation with the Tigers. I still recall Brasher being ‘that player’ my school mates & I were in awe of. Funnily enough he was fresh out of school himself when he burst onto the scene.

Wasn't Brasher still at school when he made his debut in 1989 with the Tigers, played the grand final that year before doing his HSC.

Noel, and his older brother Les, were true "country boys" when they came down to the big smoke at the Roosters. When Futon lefdt the Roosters, Noel was one of the p[layers who went with him (Les went back to country footy instead). Noel was very much a roll you own type with his ciggies.

That Canberra v Roosters match was the preliminary final as the Roosters lost to Manly the week before 10-6 to Manly in what was the toughest match of that season's final campaign. It was widely held that hwoever lost that match would be so beat up they'd be cannon fodder for the Raider, which they were. Many held the "real" Grand Final of that year was the Manly v Roosters Major Semi-Final as it was tough, brutal (but legal) with skill being the deciding factor in thaty game.

Pretty sure Les Cleal headed up to Brisbane Brothers for a year or two before returning to the bush. Only had the one season, 1982, with the Roosters.

If you regard winning Test and Origin series as overrated, then hats off to you. Agree he was a grub. But like a Shane Warne, it is immaterial to their greatness as players whether they are likeable.

As I said he was good, but I would not classify him in the top players I have seen play.
He must have a few relatives posting here :)

BTW he wasn't just a grub on the field but an absolute prick off the field too

With all these great games available and the popularity of them, you have to wonder why Fox and/or the NRL haven't tapped more into the DVD boxset market.

Yes Les had 1 year at Brothers in 83.

They signed a whole bunch of Sydney players, including Tom Raudonikis as captain coach, Glen West, Dave Cartwright ( Bryce's old man) and Les Cleal.

They performed shithouse.

I really wish Fox or whoever owns these games, would spend a bit of time and money and overlay the score in the top corner of these old games - like they do with all matches now. I know the game time clock would be near impossible to do, but the score would not be that hard surely and it would make those games so much easier to watch.

Yep, it would help. At times, the commentators are talking about a game as if it is in the bag, one teams dominated and then you find out eventually the one team is only leading by 6 or maybe 8 points or whatever. Different times.

It seems like the old games (80s) the camera does not zoom in on the ruck so closely, more of a wide picture and in my opinion that makes it look a lot better on TV.

Kenny should be an Immortal - if they are going persist with that idiotic concept.
