I'm very happy with this signing if it is indeed legitimate.
As much as he probably lacks the speed and agility now, I have this irrational desire to see him play in the centres, especially if it means pushing Naiqama to the wing and Rankin out of the team altogether.

Does anyone else find it strange that the club hasnt confirmed the signing of Idris yet?

As for goal kicker - honestly, I think the answer is hodkinson.

1. Very experienced
2. Will get sick of winning one game a year eventually.
3. Defends OK
4. Big game experience
5. a high 70%s goal kicker.
6. Would probably move for the exorbitant fee that the press is quoting Brookes wants.
7. Would control the game more.

Hodkinson would compliment Moses so well, although I really really want to see this out with Brooks. The kid is special, he just needs confidence to get to his best. 2017 is make or break for Brooks. If he doesn't kick on then hopefully he finds form at another club and we can sign the likes of Hodkinson to partner Moses (provided Moses form continues)

When do you draw the line on brooks reaching his potential? As a Penrith fan it's what I am used to, tantalising potential.

Potential only takes you so far.
Moses, imho is the better of the two.

There have been games where Brooks has honestly looked like the next Andrew Johns. When he is on fire he is unbelievable but he has just looked really gun shy or even disinterested. We were all ready to punt Moses but he finally came good.

However

I know what you mean by drawing a line. We have had many players hyped up but never reaching their potential. Sironen, Ben Murdoch Masila, Cherrington, Groat, Rowe...the list goes on.

Brooks contract expires at end of 2017. This is his chance to show he is the real deal. No excuses about pressure, hype or disinterest. Either he makes it or he doesn't and we look at buying a half back for the first time since Scott Prince.

I've got my money on Brooks making it. It's just a feeling but he will come of age and he will be brilliant

You have Blake, Whare, Hiku, Peachey (unless they move him into the forwards,) and Hardaker all fighting for spots.
Blake won't be leaving. Hiku has 2 more years. Peach will probably go back to being a utility. Hardaker isn't being signed so you are welcome to him, but I doubt he comes cheap. Whare expires at the conclusion of next season, it all depends for him on how he comes up after two injury riddled seasons. DWZ is also off contract after next season. A lot depends on whether Moylan is moved to the halves.

Agreed 100% - we could sign some young untested bloke, or this guy who has done it all before - Im very happy with it.

Yep let's be serious, it was either going to be him or a Lachlan Maranta type signing. I don't see any downside to this. If he performs he'I'll be in first grade and a tremendous asset. If he's a dud he'll be in nsw cup and probably bugger off mid year.

Travelling can do wonders for young people. Being stuck in the same routine, seeing the same people doing the same shit day in day out can really make you disillusioned from everything. He was probably just over it all and couldn't be buggered playing NRL anymore.
It sounds corny but travelling the world at a young age puts a certain level of maturity into you that cannot be coached. Call me an optimist but I think we are going to get the best out of him this year.

Now for the debate...is he playing centres or back row?

We known that he is defending next to Moses but that could still be right back row...

James Phelps reporting in Tele today that Idris getting $200K base contract next year +$5k for each NRL game he plays so could end up with well over $300k...

So much for the Tigers taking a chance on a minimum contract for someone that has been backpacking around the world the last couple of years...

Not in 2017...

Tigers are taking a chance on him next year..you don't automatically go from a couple of years of partying back to solid NRL first grader..

I'd be careful taking the telegraphs word on anything, especially when it comes to our club.

Whilst I would normally agree and yes you can see how long it took Hopoate and Rapana to come back from their time off, I think umina is correct in Idris is different.

For starters one of his biggest asset is his size. So whilst his timing, skill etc might take a while to come back he will still be a massive fcking unit. Get him one on one with any half and most centres and he'll run over them.

Also his is a guy who played for nsw and Australia before his 21st bday when he didn't give a shit about rugby league. Whilst it could all be talk he is saying the right things and for the first time in his life looks like he wants to do this. If he is a flop in 2017 it's likely no one in the NRL will want him in 18 so it's in his last chance.

I don't expect him to be an instant star but I'm confident he'll prove a good buy for us.
