Not just private schools, I was doing a haka for Russell primary school and bay of islands college before a game. The boys from Morewa though took the cake they were big guys used to scare the crap out of us skinny little white kids.

Honestly, why would you not want to do it? It gets you fired up before the game and is part of both NZ and All Black tradition. The only reason you wouldn't do it is if you were blatantly racist, inwhich case you shouldn't be playing rugby....

And if you didn't want to do it because of your race and culture.... you should be despised and kicked out of RU..

Copa ! Where are going with this one mate ? The Haka is part of the NZ history . Not just the All Blacks .
But every rugby mad school has a Haka . All the rugby private schools in NZ has a 1st XV Haka and a school Haka .
Before you become a All Black . Not only you do your 1st XV , you also perform a Haka in every rugby national team in NZ .
Just going from what my section head was saying.... just got curious.... he's looking to retire in a few years and wants to go home...

I'd wonder why any Kiwi would refuse. It's the best psych up in the world in any sport, and it doubles as the best intimidory tool against your opposition!

I know bayrep ! Every level of schools and school rugby teams has the Haka . When I use to play 1st XV for Mt Albert Grammar we did a Haka but nearly the whole team were Samoan and Pacific Islanders .
I remember our triditional games were always against some of the best rugby schools in NZ (Wesley College , Auckland Grammar , Hamilton Boys , Palmerston North , New Plymouths , Whangarei boys , Church College , St Stephens , Hato Petera , Tauranga Boys etc .
Everyone of those schools did the Haka and the whole schools plus thousands of their supporters did the haka throughout the whole game .
I also attended a game between St kevin's (Timaru) and Waitaki Boys(Oamaru) which has been going on for over a hundred years between this white private schools .
It was great watching two white schools and 10,000 of their supporters going at each other with Haka after Haka .
The most scary ground to play was at Te Aute College Hawkes Bay . Even the toughest of all Samoan boys had jelly knees playing in front of thousands of Maori doing the Haka .

I saw the Maori do their Haka live in Toronto 2 years ago - it was a different one from the AB's, a bit longer. It was great to watch, the Canadian crowd loved it.

Then you shouldn't be playing for New Zealand! Go play for your own country...

I don't have any Maori blood in me at all, white as a sheet of paper, but i've done the Haka for my schools first XV (Which I never even played 5 mintues for hahahahahaha) and never moaned about it nor thought about refusing to do it at all, ain't part of my culture/heritage but it's a big part of New Zealand rugby and I think that all New Zealand rugby players should respect that.

Look, you're not even from NZ, and you obviously don't have a clue. Come back whe nyou can actually provide a SPECIFIC example of why someone wouldn't ant to perform the haka and we'll listent to you. There's a big difference to not really caring about it and actually having a valid reason to object.

And don't think that's a decent reason, unless you can cite a specific culture who would object, with reasons that aren't simple racism.

I did...

I also think I found my answer... It won't go down well at all.

Saying no to the haka is akin to saying "Nah, I'm not going to sing the national anthem".

I'm 32 and I had to sing God Save the Queen when younger before we switched ... there are a lot of folk older than me out there... not many players though.. except for the Broncos golden oldie.
