If you were a player agent

Okay now im aware it takes a special kind of maggot to be a successful player agent.
But sometimes the short term gains these idiots may get are bad decisions in the long term.
The best example I can think of as a Broncos supporter is Chris Walker. I really rated him and feel that if he stayed at the Broncos he would have had a much more successful career.
Anyway what kind of agent do you think you would make?

Rugby league is short term. They don't know when their last contract will be. They don't know when they'll get a major long term (or permanent) injury. I don't blame players at all for getting every cent they can as long as they honour contracts.

The question is really about how you would conduct yourself as an agent.
I believe if youare a true fan of rugby league you would make a terrible agent for a rugby league player.

99% of the decisions they make have to be short term - the average player has a 43 game career.

Player managers are strange because they are the only people who represent the players wishes. They are the only people that the players can tell what to do. Everyone else in the game tells the players what to do. The NRL, the clubs, coaches, even refs. And of course the players have no control over fans. Basically everything that happens in the game is decided by people other than the players. The only time they can have some weight is during contract negotiations, and even then the salary cap gets in the way. And because the player can harm his earning capacity by speaking publicly, it is up to the manager to make the waves. That's why they have every media organisation and club CEO on speed dial, and vice versa.

When managers are out there stirring s**t it is because they have been asked by their boss.
That's what they get their 7% for - networks, nous, and the dirty work.

...but then you wouldn't be a player agent because you wouldn't have any clients. You can't conduct yourself in any manner without the job.

They are like Real Estate Agents. Some are very dubious. They are more concerned with high player turn over and the fee commissions that come with it.
The Eels would have been the best club for agents to work with last year.

To answer the question, I have no idea what I'd be like. I'd plan on being a good one at least, but I don't know how I'd go.

Until you sit across the table from a CEO and demand $1.5 million over 4 years and he shakes his head and offers $750k over 3 years, I'm not sure how anybody would know how they'd go.

How do you tell a bloke he is worth half of what he reckons to his current club, then manage his disappointment/anger (ego) and convince him (and his family) not to talk to anybody about the issue and remind him it is imperative not to look like a greedy merkin while you are massaging the story into a sympathetic (opportunistic) journo in order to make your client seem like the good guy without getting stitched up, and at the same time also try to get some better offers from other clubs while avoiding detection of the cap auditor because of anti-tampering rules?

In other words, I have no idea how to do Mike Newton's job.

The best clubs would be, like Parra, ones that are struggling and must pay overs. The other good clubs are the ones that you have a relationship with and will sign your $100k nuffie ahead of someone else's nuffie just because he's yours.

Ricky Stuarts is a genius. Thats teachin' em all how to sell snake oil.

As for Marshalls, how did the Wests Tigers get stuck potentially paying this guy 40 grand while he went and played union. After he initiated the release. Little wonder we are broke.

I would offer a 2% reduction on every other agents asking price to get the players in.

I would then get as many players as I could, and send all the good ones to the Dragons, and all the shit ones to the Broncos, Melbourne and merkinerbury.
