I'll say it again, if you want to drop Grothe you should drop the following as well, because they're all playing worse than he is:

Luke Burt
Joel Reddy
Nathan Cayless
Josh Cordoba??????
Fuifui Moimoi
Daniel Wagon
Chad Robinson
Weller Hauraki
Junior Paulo
are you off your head???

IMO he has been one of our most consistent and committed players - despite the horrendous brain snaps.

Fair dinkum, if we get rid of him we would then literally have one player who the opposition have trouble tackling - and he plays about forty minutes a week.

If our forwards ran with his gusto and commitment we would have won every game this season.

He must have come close to topping the forum poll alst 2 weeks I would have thought.

He may have cost us points in that game - but he didn't cost us the match. What is costing us games is our absolute lack of penetration in attack and our woeful defence, including line speed on goal.

Put simply, Manly marched downfield at will, whereas we struggled for field position other than from penalties. We put up bombs and hoped for the best, and ran one out for 5 tackles. Any time Manly needed poiints they put on a second man play and copped a cheap try.

Biggest problem with dropping Grothe is you lose the metres the forwards don't make. Catch 22 situation unfortunately.

Talk is cheap, but honest self-assessment is better than denial. Good on him.

Except for his positional lapses, Eric is one of our best.

Yeah, he probably contributed the most to Friday night's loss, but he wasn't bailed out by the other 16 either. I was really angry with him on the night, but have calmed down a little since.

Poor games happen. Its why its a team sport, the rest of the team needs to lift and dig you out of the hole. Repeated Poor games through repeated lack of effort/concentration/ability is when you need to be questioned. I think you can question Erics concentration but not the other 2. hopefully he fixes it soon coz we need him firing.

Everyone is aware of how shocking his defensive abilities are, i'm not going to defend him but every week he makes more metres than our forwards. So the dilemma is whether to drop him or not, personally i believe he should play as a forward off the bench. That way we get his great go forward but none of his defensive issues.

Oh yippee! I was just thinking to myself "Hey, y'know what this place really needs? Another thread ragging on Eric Grothe, that'll liven us up!"

I wasn't ragging on him i was recommending he should make a move to the forwards.

Sorry but moving Eric top the forwards is a waste of time...... he doesn't possess the workrate required to make it as a forward.

From what Hagan has said on the radio recently, it appears the coaching staff are in his ear about coming off his wing in defence, yet he still falls into the trap sometimes.

It also appeared that he had got rid of some of the loose play he displayed when bringing the ball back off our line (such as throwing poor passes), but Friday night really was terrible stuff from the big man.

I seem to curse him every game, but then he does some amazing stuff with the ball too. I feel for Hagan as it is certainly a tough decision re what to do with Grothe!

He has a better work rate them some of the forwards who are on our bench...

Yes, but as he would be required to defend in the middle third of the park his tackle count would be expected to at least be in the high teens and early twenties as opposed to the four tackles per game he corrently makes. He doesn't have that sort of work rate to be able to make a lot of hit ups as well as make 15-20 tackles a game.

You're moving him from wing to the front row?

Yeah I'm sure he'll handle that all of a sudden!

Keep him where he is, he is still one of our few attacking weapons. I agree with Hayne to fullback for the same reason.

the first mistake was a shocker but it was wet. At least he was trying to create something out there.

Second try was really touch and go. That wasn't the first or last time you will see that from a fullback/winger this year.

B. Smith is a very good defensive centre so I'm sure Grothe confidence will grow with him back. Grothe is an insanely good attacker and if we actually had some structure out there with our set plays he would be running over teams...

Right now we can only score tries from kicks and the kick from hindmarsh is typical of our season so far...pure luck...all our attack is flat footed. I really hope that is all sorted out before we face penrith because i'm more worried about our attack then our defence.
