No - not trolling.

Just noted that C9 painted the victory up as the Dragons first in 31 years, and so did the MC. Most of the players in the moment said similar things (understandable) alhough one (I forget who, maybe a comenator) made a nice mention of the Steelers. And Gus and Rabs carrying on about the big red V - guys, a team based in Wollongong just won the comp.

As much as it was Saints first win in 31 years, and their 16th overall, and as much as it was the JV's first, it was also the Steelers first.

I don't recall in 2005 there being such a focus on one JV partner over another, even though everyone was calling them the Tigers, but there was not the focus on it being "their first since 1969" (or 1952).

As much as Saints provide the history and the spiritual home at Kogarah, the Illawarra provides the juniors and the clubs functional home - where they live and train. That needs to be recognised very loudly.

I don't recall in 1995 there being such a focus on one JV partner over another, even though everyone was calling them the Tigers, but there was not the focus on it being "their first since 1969" (or 1952).

Bulldogs were not a JV and no one calls them the Tigers..

Agreed. Constantly referring to Saints history is very disrespectful to Illawarra especially as they are the majority of the juniors base.

ps: 2005 not 1995

Excuse my ignorance but I don't understand how three teams can win a grand final, particularly not two which are defunct.

balmain and western suburbs merged as the wests tigers (new colours and name)

Stgeorge and Illawarra formed a joint venture as the Stgeorge Illawarra Dragons (same colours and name)

Merger... Joint-Venture?

Different colours?

Same name?

Thanks for clearing that up.

i was only looking to see who would take the bait , i see your point though

i think it is because Stgeorge and Illawarra can come back as stand alone clubs Technically they arent defunct

why they would give it as 16 to stgeorge - 1 Illawarra and 1 to the jv

People are entitled to say whatever they like. It won't change the history books, which will show (as of 2010):

St. George Dragons - 15 premierships
Illawarra Steelers - 0 premierships
St. George/Illawarra Dragons - 1 premiership

A couple of other things:

- It wasn't an all-Sydney grand final
- It hasn't been 31 years since "the Dragons", as we now know them and have for 12 seasons, have won the comp
- It's not the first premiership for the "Steelers" - they never won a premiership and haven't been in existence as a first grade side for 12 years

Yes of course - 05 not 95. I agree it was a tad disrespectful considering the Illawarra contribution. I also noted Darius Boyd telling everyone that it is a great place to be considering he previously said that he would only stay if Bennett was coach.

Which club did the team go to last night?

What the "books" say is meaningless. Perception is reality, and thanks to the media this was an all sydney grand final, it was the first Dragons premiership in 31 years and the first for the Steelers.

If you look at the "books" there is no such thing as "Prime Minister" in this country. But that's irrelevant because noone sees it that way. The books say everything you just said, but that's not how people see it and that's what counts.

Even the NRL website is calling it the first for Illawarra, the 16th for St. George, and the first for St. George-Illawarra as a joint venture.
