The Illawarra Reserve Grade team is to be called the "Cutters"

Idiots. It should be the Steelers. I hate how Rugby League can totally disrespect and disregard their history and heritage sometimes. Not to mention the 'branding' that the Steelers have, being an ex-NRL team.

As mentioned on the NRL Jerseys thread, it's a joint venture between the Dragons, the Illawarra leagues club, the Steelers club and the Illawarra League and apparently there is animosity between the two leagues clubs and to keep all parties happy they decided not to use the Steelers name.

IF that's the case, I would have just thought that Illawarra RLFC would be a good name for the NSW Cup side.

Henson, I don't think the new Illawarra team is a joint venture. It would be a good question to ask but I am sure St.George are putting no money into the team. I was under the impression that the Illawarra Leagues Club was the single entity behind the new Illawarra team.

The facts need to be checked. My belief is that the Steelers club has put up hardly any if any money at all and that's why the team is not called the Steelers. I stand to be corrected though.

There are a few reasons for not using the Steelers name :

- As mentioned before, it is Illawarra Leagues and STGIRLFC putting forward most of the money. Steelers Leagues is contributing, but nowhere near as much as the other two.

- Part of the agreement was that whoever became the major sponsor had the rights to the monkier for the side as well. Illawarra Coal are not going to want the side to be associated with Wollongong's steel industry.

Does this mean the Illawarra SG Ball and Harold Matts sides will also be known as the Cutters?Disgrace lack of respect for the regions history.Another case of egos being out of control in RL.

It's not part of the deal.

The Illawarra CRL sides will probably be known as the Cutters now. I don't think they had a nickname before so I guess they'll have one now.

Since Steelers Leagues still 100% backs the HM + SG Ball sides, they will still be the Steelers. Illawarra Leagues is the main backer for the new Reserve Grade side, hence part of the reason for the new name.

Also, there is no love between Steelers Leagues and Illawarra Leagues, so anyone expecting the Steelers brand to be relaunched was the ultimate optimist.

Illawarra Leagues is also a better Leagues Club to visit than Steelers Leagues (which is a shit hole to be honest) for anyone visiting the area for the footy this year.

I can understand the reasoning why the team isn't called the Steelers - becasue three parties are behind the venture and not just the Steelers, but so what? The team should be called the Steelers anyway. This is an incredibly petty and short-sighted decision by Illawarra Leagues.

The 'Steelers' name has the 'brand', has an NRL history, and resonates with the fans and the district and had more chance of connecting with the community and attracting fans to watch them play. 'Cutters' means jack s**t to anyone, and may get confused with the Mackay Cutters in the Queensland Cup.

So now we have a NSW Cup team with the same illawarra name and jersey & colours and design as the Steelers had, but are called the Cutters. Genuis. And to top it all off there is still the Illawarra Steelers in the SG Ball and Harold Matthews. How confusing.

And sponsors come and sponsors go - so what will happen when this coal company decides in future to no longer sponsor the team? Has anyone thought of that? Hopefully this Illawarra team WILL be called the Steelers one day.

History can and does mean something when used right. This as a PR and marketing opportunity missed, and an oppiortunity to revive the Steelers name and they've muffed it due to pettiness.

Read the opening post in this thread. It's not entirely clear if either the Steelers or Dragons will be contributing money to the venture but they will definitely be providing administrative and football department support.

Not keen on the Cutters name, should've been Steelers tho I know about the acrimony with the IRLFC.

They may have their reasons but I think this is a massive marketing mistake.

I like the Cutters for Mackay - symbolic with the sugar cane but the Illawarra area - I don't agree. Good to see St George see sense and have the Illawarra name back in business. Now for Wests Tigers to see some sense - U20's Balmditto for the NSW Cup team.ain Tigers or Wests Magpies and the

It was made pritty clear at the outset that the Illawarra Steelers logo was never going to be used as a symbol for the new Illawarra NSW Cup team.

This is a different entity entirely from the Illawarra juniors as in SG Ball and H.M's this is more to do with the CRL and the Carlton league as a whole to give senior players a path way to higher honours ie the Dragons.

The reason for the average age of the team being no more than 23 with a couple of guys being over that age Ty McCarthy and Ray Cashmere.

Also this has little to do with the Dragons also even though some people think otherwise this was mooted over 3 years ago that the Illawarra wanted to have a senior team back in a higher division.

People say this is a reserve grade for the Dragons its far from that this is to show the Illawarra has plenty of talent and that winning the CRL country championship 3 years in a row was no fluke.

I'm just stoked to have another team to support. It was ridiculous having all these talented fringe players split amoungst 4 or 5 teams. They have to develop combinations.

Look at the potential starting pack:
Latimore
King
Gower
Miller
Matthews
Marketo

Interchange:
Cashmere
Ah Mau
Stockwell
Vea

Pretty bloody good team.
And lots of players pushing for first grade.
I'd pay to watch that side.
Really hope this works.
