Scans have revealed that Rabbitohs captain Greg Inglis has injured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee which could see him sidelined for six months.

Inglis’ injury occurred in the opening minutes of last night’s match against the Tigers however it was not diagnosed as an ACL injury until the scans were taken this morning.

Rabbitohs General Manager of Football, Shane Richardson, said: “The injury occurred in the first instance in the match, not as a consequence of Greg playing on further.

“Our medical staff further examined the injury at the half time break and they felt the knee was stable, and they along with the Head Coach and Greg himself agreed that he would go on and play in the second half.

“I, along with the rest of our Club, have the greatest of confidence in our medical and coaching staff to make the best possible decisions about our players’ wellbeing.

“We have the quality of squad to continue our quest throughout the season and Greg, as our captain and senior leader, will continue to play a significant role throughout the year.”

I don't like GI much but to play on for 50 minutes with an ACL rupture is huge.

It says in the statement playing on it didn't contribute to further damage.

Misconception. Most players don't have an issue with the ACL repair, it's the other damage done due to the instability. Often there is cartilage torn or some kind of bone injury as well.

The internal knee joint on GI, would be buggered anyway with his history. So maybe that's why they didn't pull him off

The recovery to full fitness takes quite a while though, even when they play after nine months it's closer to 18 before the strength has returned to the whole leg (hamstring or quad, depending where they take the graft from).

Sad news but the way the commentary team kept going on and on about it last night was the real tragedy.

Souths need to move on, GI is now 30 and will not be able to get back to his best, unfortunately it can happen in the cruelest of ways but I think he should consider retiring seeing how much damage his knees have endured.

At this time in his career, does he go the artificial LARS or an Achilles from a donor corpse?

I wonder if he has any cartilage left to grind down.

And six months would be for someone young with no prior knee problems.

Don't know whether this is good or bad, but this happened to his good knee'. So it's not an injury on top of an already bad knee, but now he has two dodgy knees
