Its one thing to say he will take a pay cut but there is big grey area there because who knows how big the cut would need to be. I hope he does stay with the club but more importantly i hope he stays with League.

Of the big four players that everyone talks about (cronk, smith, slater, inglis), Greg is probably the most expendable and although it pains me greatly to say it I would rather see him go and keep the other 3. Lets hope it doesnt come to that and the club can find some way (legally!) of keeping all 4 of them.

Which players you guys reckon the Storm will have to let go to get back underneath the cap?

I think they'd move heaven and earth to keep the big 4, but I think that Slater might be the one to go. When Inglis played at fullback a few years ago he did pretty well. Plus he'd get his hands on the ball a lot more. Inglis offers more utility value IMO because he can play anywhere in the backline except halfback.

Surely Cronk, Inglis and Smith would add up to about 1.5 million a season at least. Tolman's gone and even if you got rid of Tolman, Lima and Blair, you'd have a hard time fitting a decent forward pack in there.

IMO Inglis will go along with Lima, Neilson and possibly Blair.

We have able replacements in Bromwich, Whiddop, Cahill and Kite...

he may say he will take a paycut now, but with the amount they are over they can't get under the cut by releasing a few mid-tier players and the big 4 taking paycuts. unless the paycuts were well into the 6-figures, i would expect at least one of those big four to go. i don't think the Storm will have any other choice.

Irrespective of what happens after the audit, I was really proud of what Greg said in that article. Its rare these days for superstars of our game, to say what he did.

I really hope we can keep Greg...

The NRL said they won't allow the Storm players to take pay cuts. The want the players to leave and find other clubs. Such ashame really. As a fan of a club who's lost millions worth of players over the years (Mason, SBW, Maitua, Thurston, Price, Asotasi, Tonga, Anasta, Sherwin, O'Meley), I know how much it sucks that a team pays the price for their own success, and something definitely needs to be done about it.

Haha what the f**k?

The Storm developed their stars from a young age. The Bulldogs poached a bunch of star players.

I sympathise with the Storm, but the Dogs a victim of their own success? Don't suck up to the Storm fans to try and compare the two.

Did the NRL really say that? I must have missed that. How can they prevent the players from taking cuts, is it because they are on contract? If the players are passionate enough to take a salary cut to keep the core of the team together then you would think they would have the right to do so.

I think they'd just refuse to register the new ones?

It's because the team would have been illegally assembled.

Don't know how relevant, or legal, that argument by Gallop would be. One, as a nation we are free to negotiate our own salaries and 2, the players could also argue they were never given the chance or choice to salary-sacrifice.

Of the players I listed:

Mason, SBW, Maitua, Thurston, Price, Asotasi, Tonga, Anasta, Sherwin, O'Meley

Tonga (Eels), Anasta (Souths) and O'Meley (then Northern Eagles) were the only ones who really played in the NRL before the Bulldogs poached them. However, ALL of the above players made a name for themselves at the Bulldogs as established first grade players.

All except Sherwin have represented their nation (Australia & New Zealand).

What relevance does that have at all? Leaving out the fact that IIRC all players run as sole traders not salary & wage type employees, even if they were allowed to salary sacrifice it wouldn't change how much the Storm paid for their services. Fringe benefits are definitely covered by the salary cap.
