Poor bastard can't take a trick.

McKinnon and Obi must have a bit of Nostradamus in them - the signing of McCulloch is looking like a stroke of genius

has he ever played a whole season with us ? he seems to be out for 25-30 % of the season every year. Certainly something to consider when coming to contract time.

Have they been the same recurring injuries though or are they different each year? He’s been pretty unlucky imo. What I wouldn’t give to see Watson play a full season for us.

I like Watson but he's bad value for money. He's one more major injury away from me thinking we should consider letting him go. His constant injuries make things extremely difficult.

I just want to know how sides like Melbourne, Rorters etc rarely cop injuries like we do.

shoulder, plantar fascia ( bottom of foot ) , groin, and now ankle. After a while though the question must be asked. Is it his body, bad luck or just the way he plays the game.

If I've got X amount of money to spend on players to win a premiership he'd want to be a dead set superstar for me to fork out solid coin for a player that is out injured 1/3 of the time. Bad luck or not.

I like Watson , I think he's a Knight through and through.....but I want a Premiership more.

He's proving a bad investment, I agree 1 more injury and I'd have serious concerns about signing him up on good coin.

If he's out now for 8 games and plays the rest of this season all together he will have missed 20 games in 3 seasons. Wonder if he'll take a 30% pay cut.

I think Watson goes flat out in all he does but lacks the technique therefor is more likely to get injured, no doubt he puts his body on the line for Knights. It’s the way he plays and unfortunately he will incur injuries

How he rolled his ankle didn't look particularly bad either.
how he rolled it annoyed me. A little man coming over in cover was never going to stop a man of that size with that type of tackle.

A good old Stevie Mortimer style around the boot laces tackle would have stopped him and Connor walk away injury free.

Give Watson a 70% value contract. Its good having him miss some games because he is our 14 and it gives us opportunities to blood new lads.

Daniel Saifiti sidelined for up to six weeks as Knights welcome back Barnett and Watson

BARRY TOOHEY

Newcastle Knights

Mitch Barnett will end almost four months of injury exile when the Knights enforcer returns to bolster Newcastle's forward pack for Saturday's clash against South Sydney at Bankwest Stadium.

Barnett's comeback after a neck operation could not be more timely with the club facing the prospect of being without frontrow spearhead Daniel Saifiti for up to six weeks after scans confirmed he suffered significant knee ligament damage in last Sunday's loss to Parramatta.

The Knights will also welcome back bench utility Connor Watson from ankle surgery against the Rabbitohs while backrower Sione Mata'utia returns after missing the Eels defeat due to concussion.

"It's good and bad news on the injury front," Knights coach Adam O'Brien told the Newcastle Herald.

"We get Barney and Connor back from some long term stuff and Sione returns but then we go and lose Daniel Saifiti for at least four weeks and possibly as long as six weeks. And Brodie Jones did a rib cartilage and is gone for three to four weeks. We can't take a trick."

O'Brien has named Barnett, Watson and Mata'utia on the bench with Aidan Guerra retaining his spot in the backrow for his 200th NRL game.

But the coach admits he is toying with the idea of starting with Barnett and will leave a decision on the final makeup of his run-on side until later in the week.

"There is a possibility that Barney might start but I haven't made up my mind on that one yet," he said.

Barnett hasn't played since losing all feeling in his right arm following a tackle in the first half against the Wests Tigers in round two back in March.

It was discovered bulging discs in his neck were pressuring his spinal chord and he was forced to undergo surgery to relieve the stress on the nerves in his arm.

He was given the all clear to resume playing by his specialist last week but the club erred on the side of caution, preferring to give him another full training week before allowing him back on the field.

"He gives us some added aggression Barney so it will be good to have him back out there,"O'Brien said.

Watson returns after he damaged ankle ligaments early in his side's 14-all draw with Penrith in round three at Campbelltown Stadium when the competition resumed after the shutdown in late May.

He has pushed Tex Hoy out of the 17-man squad although the coach admitted he contemplated using both Watson and Hoy on the interchange rotation.

"Tex is the unlucky one and I did think seriously about having both him and Connor coming off the bench,"O'Brien said.

"But in the end, for the balance of the team, I decided to go with just Connor. The other thing is it means we can get some extra stuff on the training paddock into Tex because he hasn't always been getting big minutes."

As expected, Jacob Saifiti will start in the frontrow alongside David Klemmer with his brother sidelined.

Souths will be without fullback Latrell Mitchell [suspension] and centre Campbell Graham [facial fracture] and have named Jaxson Paulo to debut on the wing.

Cant take a trick alright.

JSaf's chance to shine and make a name for himself.

No mention of Glasby, he's had a few knocks this year so maybe the brain needs a month off ? The article I read on Sione and the results of his head knocks was scary shit.

KP has had a few knocks this year and partly due to the way he plays......anyone else notice he tucks his legs in when leaping high for the ball ? Inviting attackers into his space....Billy Slater had the right technique , he's stick the legs out so a would be attacker would cop a boot to the face.

I hope Saifiti gets back to charging onto the ball with good leg drive. His last couple of games have been a bit flat for mine.
I would hope Jacob sees this as an opportunity to stamp himself as a starting front rower (albeit at the expense of his brother at the moment) and he goes extra hard - it is an ideal opportunity for him to show Obi he is continuing to develop and compete for his chance.

I've got a feeling this may be one of those break out games for Jacob...like it was for Dan when he pretty much single-handedly monstered the Souths pack a season or 2 back - it will be a very sweet moment in his career (and for Knights fans) if he can replicate that performance on Saturday ;)
