On the upside, I did learn today that ancient polynesian seafarers could assess wave strength and frequency (and use the information learned to determine distance from shore) by dipping their testicles in the ocean. *edit - and wave direction

They have largely lost that skill though. Modern Polynesian seafarers using that method can only tell how cold it is.
