Agree Big Red V, we seem to be conservative on and off the field.
Agree with your perspective here VD, but i’d argue its not luck, its that we continue to allow other sides a sniff at crucial times in games. Attack and defensive a lot more effective, however, the team is still work in progress in this area imo.Flanno is a great tactical coach and last 2 wins proves he knows his stuff. The South‘s game we lost by 1 point and in that game we scored 5 tries to 4 and if Val had kicked well that day it would have been another win. The Parra one point loss should not of happened after having a 12 point lead and if our field goal attempt was successful it would have been another win. With a tiny bit of luck in those games we would be in the top 4.
You can almost literally bet on this happening. And we always pay the price for it. Stuff like that lost us the games against Souths and Parramatta. We are specials to make a stupid error at EXACTLY the moment you cannot afford an error. Val's attempted offload when Manly was down to 12 men is a perfect example. We didnt see the ball forv5 and a half minutes after this error and Manly scored 8 points when they should have conceded 12.
Time to revisit this post.....Great questions, SnowDragon!
I think my response that covers just a few of your points is that SF doesn't want to be caught short of genuine first-graders like he was last season.
Losing players like Suli, Sua, Liddle, KF, etc, at key points in the season cost us dearly. If I was in Shane's brain, I'd have been absolutely filthy about the last 4 weeks of '24. After swallowing that incredibly bitter pill, I'd be thinking, "I can not let that ever happen again! I need capable, tough-minded players who maintain the focus to get the job done. If I can't buy 'em, -then I'll damn-well make 'em!!!"
I imagine Shane's primary guiding thought in putting together this playing group is making sure he has strong options to cover every position on the field.
SF has been around long enough to know that a coach is only one bad injury away from losing that "star signing" for the season.
Our juniors can't come on fast enough for Shane. And what a carrot...... dangling that 30th spot in front of the young guys noses!!! It really wouldn't surprise me if he leaves that spot open at long as possible. Which kid is going to run through that brick wall to get it?
A crafty old bugger, that Shane Flanagan!
And lastly, Frank Facer was once asked how he made St George such an iconic and great club. His answer was: " I made sure that St. George was in the papers every day!"
It worked for the Matildas....
To my mind, I think Flano seems well aware well of that quote.
Naah....Shane ain't going anywhere. Cleary grew his baby at Panthers, Bellamy grew his at the Storm, Bennett grew his at the Broncos.Gibson at Easts. Flano is chomping at the bit to grow his baby at the Dragons. He knows that fate may never offer a better chance........ (But he does need to stay in the chair.)
Taking an absolute wasteland of a club to greatness. What a story!!.... What a dream!! .....What a project!!..... What a man.
So, -sitting in Shane''s brain???....he wants this so, so badly. (Some would say he's redefining the word 'obsessive') As long as he is granted the freedom he seemingly has at present, -Shane ain't going nowhere.
Good night, folks.
70 post in.. what a terrible rant. It's called a forum where we share our views both good and bad maybe you need to quit being a sook and just use the ignore button it's that easy. You and your other accounts and posters can all be a happy fun bunch together.Time to revisit this post.....
I can't believe the posts I've been seeing lately. The criticism of the coach and players is so bizarre that I am beyond exasperation.
I'm so embarrassed to myself being part of a forum group where hardly anybody understands how the NRL works.
For starters, hands up if anybody remembers that before a ball was kicked, every betting agency had Dragons favourites for last place.
Yet we critique the coach and players as if they are underachieving premiership favourites. According to those who frame the odds... 16th place will be an overachievment!!!!!
Hands up again for those who can't understand that simple logic.
I could easily post 50 pages replying to the ridiculously ignorant posts I've read in the last month. But I won't because there seems to be a new one every day.
However my current annoyance is those who think we should have kept Bud Sullivan. Are they serious? Do they not understand simple economics? The only way Flanno has held on to his emerging juniors was by letting big money players go. And where is Sullivan sitting on the Dally M table? Has he been getting wins for South's? And how have super-coaches Bennett, Cleary and Maguire been going over the last month or so?
And lastly- for the moment- would those over-opinionated, negative Nellie's with their impossibly high expectations please have the balls to just p*ss off out of this forum (as they constantly threaten) and leave it to those of us who live in a somewhat more realistic world.
Who died and made you King of how and what people should do Just because you post the most shit (pretty much 99% about the same thing) doesn't give you the right to start telling people what to do. Oh, and calling people sooks and flogs and narcistists and what not is getting very stale. Get over yourself70 post in.. what a terrible rant.
