It is not unusual for a NRL player to make 30-35 full-on, front-on, tackles in a game; if an AFL player has eight tackles, he's been outstanding.

Therein lies the problem, no good being able to boot the ball 80m if you can't takle the bastard when he starts running at you.

That side he put together would probably struggle to beat Souths Flegg let alone NSW or QLD.

I want some of the sh*t he's smoking.

Frenzy.

Stupid article. Shows a total lack of understanding for league and a naive assessment of what's required.

For example

Using superior aerobic capacity from players in all positions, the AFL team could sustain a higher intensity for longer.

Well that'd be until they get the bats in their belfrys rattled up a few times by a few neanderthal league forwards.

Obviously a tongue in cheek jibe but it's still farged.

Geez I hate AFL and all that comes with it.

They probably could....until that little element of "contact" was introduced from kick off. They run like androtops, dress like androtops, and act like androtops when they so much as get slapped in contact.

They get a point for missing for christ sake....in other words you were close, but have a point for not being good enough!

What a joke of an article.

Please, the author is a clown!

That pile of Sh*t surpasses "Nurse Betty" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0171580/ in terms of sheer stupidity and pointlessness. Their idea of defence is probably a netballer's in comparison to a grid iron team.

Granted, they can kick further, but a 70 metre distance bomb is pretty fricking useless when you have to be behind the kicker. They would be super at field goals. Except to get the point in league, you have to kick the ball BETWEEN the posts!!!

I decided to give AFL a go for the weekend sport last year, after playing Rugby League for several years... Anyway, during the AFL games i would just tackle the opposition similar to how i would when i played league, but i would get praised left right and centre.. whereas in League "HELD", then continuation in play after the play the ball.. But yeah, in AFL you make double figure tackles and your a God. Just simply holding the ball to your opposition.

I would think that it would be far easier to switch from League to Fairy ball than vice vercer.

I have played all three codes and Rugby League was by far the most physical and fitness dependant. I managed in AFL in my 3 games of it due to being able to tackle and through the sheer amount of ass that seems to accompany AFL.

"If you get the ball just kick it towards our goal," were my only instructions. It was fun hammering blokes from the side though. Cheapest shots ever, I prefer to belt blokes that can see it coming though. Morley would deadset love AFL.

Adam Goodes would be the biggest 5/8 in the history of the game. He is probably the one bloke out of that lot that could have a fair crack at it.

The kicking game across the field to a wing would destroy the small rugby league fullbacks, with the AFL men controlling the air with their aerial skills.

Problem with that is that league players have an incentive to actually catch the ball, rather than punch it through the air if the going gets tough, or more accurately, an incentive to not drop the ball. So the two games are not really comparable in that regard, even if face value initially suggests otherwise.

Nice try though from News Ltd's Melbourne mob. I've got no problems with this sort of rubbish being written on Fox Sports/Herald Sun if it works to build the game in Victoria. I've got my doubts that it will, but generally support a team in Melbourne.

That is a friggin ridiculous article, utter tripe written by an AFL fan who believes his game is the most superior.
I believe AFL is by far a more aerobically challenging sport, but put simply AFL wouldn't be able to stand the physical demands of league like tackling and taking the ball up.
I believe they might be able to take an advantage with attacking kicks like bombs, and catching them too, but getting to that end of the field would be their problem! Who would take the first couple of hit ups, and how would they cope with gang-tackling?

I say bring on an irish rules/afl style end of season series. we'll play one game of league and one game of afl and the aggregate points can be added up.

The league team would kill them in the league game, and also go very close to beating the wankers in AFL. We have far more players built to absolutely destroy them at their own game, running, footwork, tackling. The only areas they would be better are the kicking and marking, however they wouldnt need to catch and kick if they can't catch our players.

( im not privvy to positions etc in AFL, but I kind of think there are quick little runners of the ball, and then some bigger blokes to dominate in the guts around the ball with height/strength)

Lockyer
Peachey
Campbell
Thurston
Marshall
Hodges
Stewart
Growth
Tupou
Menzies
Tate
Best
Gasnier
Thaiday
gallen
Shifocfkse
Slater
King
Hill

Just s few off the top of my head that would make a very difficult team for any red afl team to play.

A mate of mine says this is no longer the case, the AFL clubs just target the right body shape, meaning tall athletic bastards, they don't even care as much about skills except to be able to kick and catch, which lets face it, you can teach to just about anyone with a bit of eye-hand coordination. The specialist ruck-rovers are a thing of the past, same is happening to full-forwards and full-backs. The game is going the way of basketball, in fact the type of players they want now is more in competition with basketball players than with the type of players in the Rugby codes or soccer.

The biggest laugh in this whole silly episode is the media spin

News Ltd's Sydney paper gleefully reporting the "massive media interest" leading up to the game. No mention that this interest would have been under direction from head office, rather than editorial staff at the Herald Sun, or News Ltd's Melbourne arm.

I wonder how big the financial hit was that they took!

Apparently it was hospitality for all - NSW QLD VIC ACT pollies, and anybody who was anybody was invited to watch the game in style. I think the tab was also picked up for flights and 5 star hotels such as Crown.

ive played both league and afl and afl is more physical because in league you know the tacklers always in front of you whereas in afl you get the ball and their trying to smash you from the front side and back. you get blindsighted because you have no idea where they are

IMO afl involved much more fitness, depending on your position you will just run and run all day, i know i did.
