International super 7's... just make it semi professional?

It would be quite easy really. Same format as IRB sevens. Call it World Seven's and start small. Sydney. Then Sydney and England. Then Sydney, England, and France.

With all the complaining about wearing out the pro players... just stick semi-pro player's only eligibility. It would fix the issue... and make the teams competing at a much closer level.

Makes sense to me at least.

Well for starters, rugby league plays 9's.
Secondly, what a waste of money.
We have enough trouble getting the money together for minnows to play games, and you want to use money to start this?
It costs over a million $ to stage the pacific cup, and thats only 4/5 teams in an affordable country.
This thread annoys me. It's good that you're trying to think of ideas, but i oppose this one whole heartedly.

And realistically fans won't want to watch second rate teams. Without NRL teams or star players not many people are likely to go. We really need to bring back the world sevens.

Rugby league plays 9's and 7's... It wouldn't expand until it could generate a profit.. start small whatever.

Regardless... I didn't put any thought into this at all... any idea presented on this forum is entirely speculative...

In other words.. pointless.

Nah. It should be just like it used to be. The fans loved it. They'll love it again. NRL clubs plus international sides. That Nines shit was News Ltd rubbish.

Most because it was overkilled.

I'd have a regional 7's tournament in say early 2015 with International teams only but only from the local region - so UK would be Atlantic, UK & Europe - Australia would be Pacific Region. The top teams qualifier for the World 7's.

Then every four year, starting in early 2016 have the proper World 7's. I'm not talking about match ups like Souths vs USA. I mean you'd break it up and structure it into pools hosted in 3 or 4 cities catering to local interest. For example, if Brisbane were to host you might see something like:

Broncos vs Titans
Queensland Country vs Queensland Metro
PNG vs Fiji
Cowboys vs Brisbane#2
Indigineous vs somebody else

etc so the different matches from the seperate pools are buffered out amongst each other. More fans go because their NRL or SL team is involved but they also get to see special local rep teams and the internationals are the icing on the cake.

Say for instance in Melbourne, you'd have Storm in the NRL pool, a VRL team in the Rep pool, then International teams that appeal to locals, maybe Greece & Italy etc

Auckland you'd have the Warriors, Maori side, some Polynesian national teams etc

Sydney you'd have the Sydney NRL club sides, maybe a Country NSW team, Lebanese in the International etc

It would be in essence more like a 7's World Cup in a miniaturised format played over 3 days with the finals on the Sunday. It would only be hosted in Australia every 8 years so NRL teams would only be involved every 8 years.

That said because there's prizemoney on offer, NRL teams might be inclined to send squads overseas and Super League might send them here. People are always talking about great inter league competition - well here's the opportunity.

as i've said before.......we should kick the season off with a "RL carnival" held on the gold coast/brisbane or sydney

friday night - world club challenge
saturday & sunday - RLIF world 7's (international teams only)

pretty damn sure the QLDgov would stump up the cash to host that.....sell the tv rights, get in a massive sponsor like coca~cola........jobs a good un'

Like the idea but would make it over two weekends. One weekend would be WCC, All Stars and Charity Sheild.

Next weekend a world 7's made up of international teams with a mix of NRL & NYC players, ESL & Acadamy players and other nations.

Tour it around Australia each year.

No one seems to be understanding that the official shorten version of Rugby League now is Rugby League nines not Rugby League sevens.
