Interpretations

After reviewing many of the matches throughout the World Cup what was apparent to me was the interpretations of the referees.

Klein like Ganson from the Super League don't play dominante tackles which created problems for sides mainly staked with NRL players.

The NRL referees always played by the stock rule of dominant and surrender, this posed real problems for the English side who couldn't come to terms with this throughout the whole tournament. Perhaps much like Australia with Klein in the Final.

Never before has it been so obvious that the ARL and RFL or the RLIF, need to ensure that both proffesional, and all competitions for that matter are playeyed under a uniform set of rules.

You might doubt what difference these rules make, but small things can be a huge advantage to a proffesional player.

it's not just been in this tournament,i've had a root through the records from the past 3 or 4 years..here's how australia have tended to struggle when a neutral or ESL ref has reffed them..

RLWC08 FINAL with klein , lost
tri nations final 06 with klein , golden point win
tri nations final 05 with ganson, lost
tri nations 05 group game againt NZ with ganson, lost
tri nations 05 group game against NZ with ganson, won by 2 points
tri nations 04 group game against NZ with russel smith , draw
tri nations 04 group game against GB with glen black, last minute try win
tri nations 04 group game against GB with glen black, lost.

stats like that could lend credence to the claim that the ARL/ricky stuart only want to play tests with their own refs...

Klein like Ganson from the Super League don't play dominante tackles which created problems for sides mainly staked with NRL players.
but NZ only had 1 non NRL player in their team..

I don't think that Superleague refs don't call dominant or surrender tackles, in fact I'm sure they do. The difference seems to be that NRL refs call wrestle tackles to be dominant whereas Superleague refs only call big hits to be dominant.

they do call dominant tackles..but they call it long before it ends up in a best of 3 submission match...

I think the above states why Australia didn't want to play under a non NRL referee for the whole tournament, and why England had every right to appeal there fate with Archer and that other fool.

Interesting statistics - then again most Australia v NZ matches would often have a northern hemisphere referee i.e Klein or Ganson.

Also the fact that the Kiwi brains trust is from the NRL, one of them being Australian, and almost all of the players either playing in Australia or with the Warriors dilutes the "SL interpretation" theory.

What Australia being the best at slowing the play the ball, which is negated by the NH referees?

Perhaps the gap only appears wide when Australia has everything in its advantage!

I'd hate to see us become like Union where it seems every ref has his own set of rules and teams are actually selected with the style of the ref in mind, but i like that refs can be a bit different and teams need to adapt.
When we have a good pool of international refs it will add to the enjoyment of test football.
The Aussies should never play under an NRL ref again.
