Round 7 Intrust Super Cup preview

EASTS TIGERS v CQ CAPRAS
Tapout Energy Stadium on Saturday, April 18 – 4.30pm
Referee: Nick Pelgrave
Head-to-Head: Easts 26 Central 9 Drawn 1
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #TIGESvCQC
Livestream: Tiger TV

Emotions will be running high at Tapout Energy Stadium when Central Queensland coach Jason Hetherington guides the Capras for the final time. Hetherington is stepping down from his role due to personal reasons, with assistant Lionel Harbin set to take the reins in an interim capacity after the match against Easts.

Central sits in 12th spot, but their ladder position probably isn’t a true reflection on their season to date. They have lost two games by two points and if those results were reversed, the Rockhampton club would be in sixth position.

Easts have been the dominant force in recent outings against CQ, having won four of the past five encounters. Craig Ingebrigtsen’s Tigers have also won their past four matches at home, the most recent a 52-0 thrashing of Souths Logan.

Shane Neumann and Grant Giess return from injury, while Dean Britt is back after serving a one match suspension. Saturday’s clash will be Dane Hogan’s 50th in the orange and black, while Donald Malone needs just 12 more points to bring up 700 Cup points.

SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS v WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS
Pinklands Sporting Complex, Thornlands on Saturday, April 18 – 5pm
Referee: Nick Morel
Head-to-Head: Wynnum 10 Sunshine Coast 2
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #SCFvWYN
Livestream: Wynnum Manly TV

Sunshine Coast Falcons have not won three games in a row since 2010. On Saturday, the rejuvenated Falcons get their opportunity to put together an overdue hat-trick of wins when they play the Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

All the signs are positive for the Falcons, who displayed plenty of character last weekend to overcome a tough Tweed Heads outfit at Piggabeen. However, this latest assignment is a whole new ball game, as they will be mixing it with one of the competition’s most professional outfits.

Wynnum Manly were ruthless last Sunday in disposing of the PNG Hunters 36-18. Seagulls coach Jon Buchanan may yet have to make a late change, with forward Tanu Wulf a likely withdrawal after an injury scare last week.

Matt Seamark requires 13 points to become the seventh player to score 1000 Cup points. He will have taken the most games to achieve the milestone. Seamark also requires four goals to become only the third player to kick 450 Cup goals.

NORTHERN PRIDE v NORTHS DEVILS
Barlow Park on Saturday, April 18 – 5.30pm
Referee: Chris Anderson
Head-to-Head: Pride 13 Norths 2 Drawn 1
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #PRIDEvDEVILS

The Pride got the monkey off their backs last weekend, recording their first win of the season. They left it until late however, getting over the top of the Dolphins with only moments to go to claim the 18-16 win. They trailed 16-0 early in the second half, before a hat-trick to rising star Linc Port sparked them back into action. This week coach Joe O’Callaghan has made only one change to his successful side, welcoming back Ben Spina at prop for Brent Oosen.

Norths played in a see-sawing game last weekend, but found themselves on the wrong side of the ledger, going down 24-18 to the Jets. Halfback Darren Nicholls didn’t play last Sunday and earlier this week it was confirmed that he had joined the South Sydney Rabbitohs for the rest of the season.

The side are unchanged this weekend, with young Brett Greinke named captain of the team. The Pride have had the better of the two sides for a long time and Norths have only won once in the past 10 games. Unfortunately for the Devils, they also have a terrible record at Barlow Park and have lost all eight games they have played there in the past.

IPSWICH JETS v BURLEIGH BEARS
North Ipswich Reserve on Sunday, April 19 – 1.40pm* (Live on Channel 9)
Referee: Jarrod Cole
Head-to-Head: Burleigh 19 Ipswich 14 Drawn 2
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #JETSvBEARS
Radio: Switch 1197am Brisbane, Valley FM 94.9 Esk; Phoenix Radio Ipswich

Burleigh fans will be hoping for a repeat of last year’s performance at the North Ipswich Reserve when the Bears thrashed the Jets 50-12. The visiting Bears were all over the Jets that day, inflicting Ipswich’s heaviest defeat at home since 1998.

Jimmy Lenihan’s Bears return to North Ipswich in good shape, despite a heartbreaking two-point loss to Easts last weekend. With three wins from six matches, Burleigh occupy sixth spot on the ladder. The sheer size and strength of Burleigh’s forward pack against the ‘attack at all costs’ Jets will ensure this is a television match not to be missed.

Ipswich has now won five in a row and a victory over the Bears on Sunday will put them within one game of equalling their seven-game winning streak in 2013. Jets flyer Marmin Barba is in doubt due to illness. But if he plays and scores a try, he will join the likes of Steven West, Brendon Lindsay, Donald Malone, Brendon Marshall and Chris Lawler as players to have scored 200 points or more for the Jets. The match will be Kurtis Lingwoodock’s 100th in the Intrust Super Cup and he will have a big role to play with Rod Griffin out with a broken thumb.

The Ipswich club will again demonstrate their community spirit by collecting donations towards the NRL Vanuatu Appeal. The Jets will also honour troops serving overseas as part of the Soldier On program and will stage their own Disability Awareness game with the ALARA Jets v Burleigh Bears disability touch football match at 1.10pm.

REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS v TOWNSVILLE BLACKHAWKS
Dolphin Oval on Sunday, April 19 - 2pm
Referee: Clayton Sharpe
Head-to-Head: First Game
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #PHINSvTSVB

Currently sitting at the top of the Intrust Super Cup ladder, the Blackhawks are on a four-game winning streak and will be looking to continue their run when they face Redcliffe at Dolphin Oval on Sunday.

The home side will be smarting following their narrow loss to the Pride in Cairns in Round 6, where they let a 16-0 lead slide at the back-end of the second half. After the game, coach Troy Lindsay admitted it was a game the team felt they lost – rather than Pride had won; with minimising their errors something the side will focus on going into this game against a potent Townsville side.

In a blow for Redcliffe, they will be without Joe Bond who suffered a suspected ACL injury last weekend. Kyle Van Klaveren has been named at fullback for this weekend in the only change to the team. The Townsville Blackhawks are unchanged.

Off the field, the Dolphins will assist Queensland Police reveal the message behind the “Oi” social media campaign that has been promoted through QPS social media in the past few weeks. Fans at the game will see a game involving Police Rugby League players and can meet police horses, police puppies and NRL ambassadors Petero Civoniceva and Tallisha Harden.

PNG HUNTERS v MACKAY CUTTERS
Kalabond Oval, Kokopo on Sunday, April 19 – 2.30pm
Referee: Tim Rutherford
Head-to-Head: PNG 1 Mackay 1
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #PNGvMC

The Mackay Cutters are one of the form teams of the competition at the moment and will travel to PNG this weekend confident of their chances of staging an upset.

They have now won five games in a row – the last two of them being especially close ones – including last weekend’s 14-12 result over the Capras, where the boot of Liam Taylor again proved vital to them.

After starting well, PNG have struggled to hit their straps and it seems like their two losses on the road has taken a lot out of the team. However, they are back at Kokopo this weekend and will be looking to regroup and claim the scalp of a competition frontrunner.

This week, there are some big ‘ins’ for the side injured duo Thompson Teteh and Adex Wera returning, as well as Lawrence Tu’u from suspension. Utility Ase Boas has not been named and is said to be waiting for a badly bruised forearm to heal. Warren Glare has also not been named while Edward Goma has dropped to an extended bench.

For the Cutters, coach Kim Williams has named an extended bench for the away trip, with new faces Gavin Bennion and Alex Farrell included in the squad.

TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS v SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES
Piggabeen Sports Complex on Sunday, April 19 – 3pm
Referee: Liam Kennedy
Head-to-Head: Tweed 14 Souths-Logan 11
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #THSvSLM

Both teams will put their hands up and admit they have not played as well as they would have liked to so far this season. Last weekend, the Seagulls let a good early lead slip against a resurgent Falcons. Despite a late comeback that ensured a tense final few moments, it was not enough to prevent the Gulls from going down 28-24.

The Magpies had a lot of rebuilding to do following their heavy loss to Easts in Round 5 – and things did not start well for them last weekend against Townsville. Down 34-0 at halftime, the Magpies showed great character in the second half to score four tries before eventually going down 46-20.

Coaches Josh Hannay and Aaron Zimmerle will both be looking at this weekend as a good chance for their teams to get back on track with a victory. In team news, Tweed Heads are unchanged from last weekend, with Hemi Mullen on an extended bench the only addition.

For the Magpies – Travis Waddell returns from a one-game suspension and will play at lock. Rez Phillips and Kailem Perkins are on an extended bench, while Simanu Crichton has been named to play for Logan Brothers in the BRL.

While this weekend clubs across the state will be collecting donations to support the NRL / QRL’s Vanuatu Relief Appeal – the Seagulls have already committed to help rebuild homes and the school at Eton village via the givealittle fundraising page. Tweed Heads and Souths Logan fans can donate to the cause now via the website or can donate on the day at the football.

Very pleasant evening at Pinklands for Wynnum's game against Sunshine Coast. Good venue for watching football and a big crowd in attendance.

Wynnum got out to a 22-0 lead early in the second half based on great defence and a fairly high error rate from SC who had a strong Storm representation in their team. The Falcons got back to 10-22 with about 20 to go but seemed to lack any desperation to put any further pressure on.

Seamark kicked a field goal with 8 or so minutes to go to make it safe.

Improved performance by Wynnum tonight, particularly their first half showing.

Townsville are definitely the team to beat this year after they did a number on my mob yesterday. Sadly it wasn't even a contest from the start and the result would have been bigger with the Blackhawks only converting 2 of their 9 tries.

A long season ahead for Redcliffe if they continue along the same path to which they started 2015.

Round 8 Intrust Super Cup preview

BURLEIGH BEARS v PNG HUNTERS
Pizzey Park on Saturday, April 25 – 3.30pm
Referee: Michael Gordon
Head-to-Head: Burleigh 1 PNG 1
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #BEARSvPNG
Live Stream: QRL Website

Burleigh will host the PNG Hunters in a special Anzac Day match with the teams playing for the Kokoda Cup in honour of those from PNG and Australia who fought alongside each other in WWII.

There will be a pre-game tribute to all ex-service personnel, who will also be offered free entry to the match (on producing their service medals). Money raised will also be donated to the Burleigh RSL. Last year’s match was a great success, attracting a record crowd for a Queensland/Intrust Super Cup game on the Gold Coast of just under 4000.

Last weekend, Jimmy Lenihan brought up his 50th win as a coach thanks to Burleigh’s 28-18 result over Ipswich. In his career, he has also presided over four draws and 49 losses. This week, there are many changes to the Bears line-up with Khan Ahwang in at fullback and Tyler Chadburn moving into the halves for an injured Todd Seymour.

Kevin Gordon is back on the wing in place of Siuatonga Likiliki, while Christian Hazard is out with a foot injury. Mark Ioane’s strong performance last week has earned him a spot on the Titans’ extended bench, with Kyle McConnell and Louis Fanene the players added to the Bears bench.

The Hunters are unchanged following their close 26-24 win over the Cutters, with Oti Bland Tony, Ase Boas and Nickson Borana on an extended bench.

TOWNSVILLE BLACKHAWKS v EASTS TIGERS
Jack Manski Oval on Saturday, April 25 – 5pm
Referee: Peter Gough
Head-to-Head: First Game
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #TSVBvTIGES

Given their logo and team colours, it is clear Townsville are a club with a genuine connection to the Defence Force. In order to recognise the city’s history as one of the country’s biggest Black Hawk defence bases, they have planned to host a commemorative ceremony prior to kick-off. The players will also take to the field in their special camouflage jerseys to mark the occasion.

On the field, this game is shaping as one of the best of the round, with the top-of-the-table Blackhawks going head-to-head for the first time against the second-placed Easts Tigers. Both teams posted imposing Round 7 wins, with the Blackhawks running in nine tries in their 40-10 win over the Dolphins, while the Tigers stamped their class all over the Capras in their 56-6 victory.

With the teams sitting first (Townsville) and second (Easts) in attack and first (Easts) and third (Townsville) in defence – it is set to be a terrific game of rugby league. The Blackhawks, who have now won five games in a row, have named an unchanged line-up, with only a minor reshuffle of the starting side and the inclusion of Tom Humble on an extended bench. Easts are also settled, with coach Craig Ingebrigtsen going with his line-up from last weekend.

REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS v IPSWICH JETS
Dolphin Oval on Sunday, April 26 – 2.10pm
Referee: Tyson Brough
Head-to-Head: Redcliffe 25 Ipswich 14
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #PHINSvJETS

Brisbane Broncos forward Joe Ofahengaue makes his Intrust Super Cup debut for the Jets in Sunday’s Round 8 clash against Redcliffe at Dolphin Oval. The former Queensland U20s prop will come into the line-up for Billy McConnachie, who is serving a one-match suspension for Dangerous Contact.

Inspirational Ipswich skipper Keiron Lander will take the field for his 100th top grade game for the Jets. The 2014 Queensland Residents skipper played his first Intrust Super Cup game for the Jets in 2010 alongside the likes of Brendon Marshall, Marshall Chalk, Luke Walker, Todd Riggs and Smith Samau.

Ipswich will meet a desperate Dolphins team yet to add to their win tally after an impressive Round 4 victory over the Norths Devils. The Phins have now lost three in a row and have not won at home in seven games.

Redcliffe have organised a huge program of activities to commemorate a century of Anzac Day soldiers, with free entry provided to those wearing their service medals. In team news, Evander Cummins moves from five-eighth to fullback, with John Brady coming into the team as the new No. 6.

NORTHERN PRIDE v SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES
Barlow Park on Sunday, April 26 – 12.30pm* (Coverage on Channel 9 from 1.30pm)
Referee: Nick Morel
Head-to-Head: Pride 13 Souths-Logan 4
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #PRIDEvSLM

It will be an early start for the Pride and Magpies this Sunday when they play as the curtain-raiser to the NRL match between the Rabbitohs and Raiders.

The Pride posted a confidence-boosting 42-10 win over Norths last weekend, with flyer Javid Bowen scoring a hat-trick. Coach Joe O’Callaghan has rewarded his players by naming an unchanged line-up for this match, including centre Dean McGilvray who made his debut for the club last weekend. Brent Oosen has been named on an extended bench.

While the Pride have now strung together back-to-back wins – the Magpies have lost their past four games – and have been held scoreless in two of their past three matches following their 24-0 loss to Tweed Heads last weekend.

Josh Hannay has rewarded Ramon Filipine for his strong performances in the BRL competition with a wing position this weekend, while his Logan Brothers team-mates David Faamita and Ihaka Watene have been named on the extended bench. The Magpies do not have the best record at Barlow Park, having only won one of their past seven matches at the ground since in 2012.

CQ CAPRAS v TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS
Browne Park on Sunday, April 26 - 2pm
Referee: Liam Kennedy
Head-to-Head: Tweed 17 Central 6 Drawn 1
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #CQCvTHS
Live Call: Capras Spreaker

Both teams have been hit hard with injury in recent weeks, with the Seagulls losing Jai Ingram (ankle), Mark Offerdahl and Jake Leary last weekend. They have been replaced in the line-up by Ethan Price (bench) and Davin Crampton (centres).

The Gulls will also be without prop Damian Sironen for this match after he pleaded guilty to a Careless High Tackle charge. He will be a big loss for the side, having played the full 80 minutes in their 24-0 win over Souths Logan.

This will be the first game in charge for new Capras coach Lionel Harbin, who became Central's 12th mentor after taking over the reins from Jason Hetherington. His father John coached the Capras in 1997 and 2012.

For this match, he has named a seven-man bench, but has made minimal changes to the starting side despite coming off a 56-6 loss at the hands of Easts. However, Dan Randall has been named for the injured Tarrant Mariner (ankle) in the centres. Andrew Dale and Aaron Watson return to the side, while former half Jonathan Tavinor has re-joined the club to add some much-needed experience. Tweed will be aiming for their 150th win in their 279th game – they have drawn 11 and lost 118.

WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS v NORTHS DEVILS
BMD Kougari Oval on Sunday, April 26 – 3pm
Referee: Chris Anderson
Head-to-Head: Wynnum 19 Norths 17 Drawn 2
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #WYNvDEVILS
Live Stream: Seagulls TV

While the head-to-head ledger gives Wynnum Manly a close 19-17 advantage, they have proven hard to beat for Norths in recent years, with the Seagulls having won the past eight games between these two sides.

In an ominous sign for the Devils, the Seagulls are also in good form winning their past two games, while Norths have struggled in recent weeks, posting losses in their past five matches including a heavy 42-10 defeat at the hands of the Pride last weekend.

Tanu Wulf has been named on the bench in the place of Stephen Coombe in what will be his 50th game for Wynnum and his 131st overall following previous stints with Souths Logan and Burleigh.

His inclusion is the only change to the Seagulls side, while there have been some key adjustments made to the Devils line-up. Francis Molo (Broncos), Luke Pollock, Todd Lowrie and Reece Baker have been replaced in the line-up by Josh Afoa, Billy Solah, Byron Creighton and Sean Loxley (BRL competition).

There will be a special Anzac ceremony staged just prior to the main game and the Seagulls will also support Wynnum RSL who will be fundraising to support Mates for Mates. All service members past and present will have free entry to this game.

Nice little 'kick-off' to the season Hellsy !

Certainly agree with your sentiments regarding the competition going from strength to strength.

Stealing your template :D my predictions are:

Premiers: Northern Pride to eke out another premiership against Easts
Wooden Spoon: Townsville ( Brave beginning but not quite up to it)
Top 5: Pride, Easts,Wynnum,Ipswich, Sunny Coast
Player of the Season: Marmin Barba
Biggest Improvers: Sunny Coast
Biggest Drop: PNG Hunters (2nd season syndrome)
Darkhorse: Ipswich

Mmmmm......maybe I shouldn't have had that lazy $50 on them getting the spoon

Call off the comp and hand the title to the Blackhawks now. Put 78 on Burleigh. Only one danger, that is their best 4 or 5 get called up the nrl side. So many fringe nrl players in one isc side.

Seen a few Blackhawks over the years fall away in the finals.

Wests in 1972 was a classic case. World beaters for most of the season, they went out in straight sets in the finals. Tweed lost their first game for the year just before the 2011 finals and they fell back to the pack after that.

Pride have had a couple of seasons where they looked invincible but ended up not making the GF.

Wynnum, for one, can take confidence out of their defeat by Townsville this year. They led them 12-0 up there, just fell away a bit with their handling and copped seven straight penalties against them in the second half before going down 16-28. You learn more from a loss than a win and I am looking forward to the rematch down here to gauge how the Gulls are going.

Ipswich beat the Blackhawks, no way are they certainties for the comp. Easts, Wynnum, Ippy could all do them on their day

They will probably be paying about $1.50 to win the comp when they put the premiership markets up this week

I'm reminded of Broncowoomba when they were in the competition. They used to thrash the lower ranked teams and racked up high for-and-against totals but they only managed 1 grand final victory: a last minute victory over Redcliffe in 2001.

Any team can be beaten on the day.

Haven't been much to cheer about this year but it felt great after watching Redcliffe beat Easts 19-12 yesterday at Langlands Park. The Dolphins' defence (which has leaked a few points this season) held the Tigers' attack at bay especially in the second half.

A sign of better things to come (I hope!!).

It's a bit hard to know what to read from that result.

Redcliffe have obviously improved from the start of the season but they still struggled to beat Souths last week. To beat Easts at Langlands either means the Tigers have dropped right off or Redcliffe have suddenly hit enough form to remain dangerous for everyone.
