I have one, and although i hate to be one of "those" people, it makes the one hour+ trip each way on the bus more bearable.

I read instead. Polish off a couple of novels a week during the commute.

As for the humble i-pod though, I've shied away from buying one for a couple of reasons: firstly, they are too expensive in my view at the moment (I can put the bulk of my music collection as MP3 files on to a few DVDs for next to nothing and play them on the PC at work - not portable, but that's where I tend to listen to music most) and there have been mixed reports on how robust they are (a few people at work have had nothing but problems with theirs - has anyone here tried to get their repaired under warranty?); and secondly, having those in ear headphones hurts my ears after a while (from the portable AM radio that I use while gardening etc to listen to the cricket).

I've heard some good things about Coby MP3 players, which are less than half the price of an i-pod. Anyone care to recommend any others?

My iPod certainly tided me over on the train home from the cricket yesterday. Watched a couple of Chaser episodes and was home before I knew it.

Robustness has never been a problem for me - and I've had two since 2004.

My first one lasted until the capacity wasn't big enough anymore, it was 40GB, so I upgraded to an 80GB one. Neither have ever had anything wrong that can't be fixed with a soft reset (Menu + Select) and the battery life is actually quite good.

Considering it's a computer that runs an iPod, a computer company.

Would, but it's easier to carry an ipod around instead of a book, especially when i have a sh*tload of Uni stuff, which is often.

I've never had any trouble with ipod robustness, and i've dropped it a few times and got it a bit damp a few times. I do take your point about the headphones though.

It's just a normal headphone jack though so you don't have to use the headphones that come with it.

I've found mine to be pretty robust and I've lost count of the amount of times I've dropped it. You get the occaisonal hiccup but just reset it and away you go. Also haven't had any problems with getting repairs done under warranty, a mate dropped his down a drain, managed to find it, put it on the heater for a couple of days and then took it back and was given a new one.

If robustness is a concern can I throw a vote up for the Creative V+ series. I've had 3 iPods over about 6 years & while they worked I always felt they were one bump away from being paper weights. A mate picked up a V+ about 18months ago & it just feels like it'll take a knock & bounce back. A few others have since picked them up & not one has had any problem whatsoever. I just grabbed another 2GB one from Dick Smith I think it was for $108 which isnt a bad price for everything it does. (Music/Photos/Video/Radio). And the fact that installing any media on them is IDIOT proof I dont think you can go wrong.

I avoided iPods when I was looking for an mp3 player. Ended up with an iRiver e10. I'd recommend it to anyone looking around.

Actually, you're not really supposed to jog with the Classic. Nano and Shuffle sure, but not so much the Classic.

I handle the repairs at my store and it's not normally a problem to get them done under warranty. We get quite a few back, they seem to have a few issues.
