In the past, I've been highly critical of Paul Gallen. I felt he played the game in poor spirit and this manifested itself in the dirty play he would engage in. My belief is that his attitude had a detrimental effect on the teams he played in.
But he has certainly made substantial improvements to his game. Namely, tempering his reckless streak, improving his passing game, footwork and becoming a supremely fit footballer. In doing so he has become the form forward in the NRL, and staying remarkably healthy which has only aided his game.
I liken him now to Bradley Clyde, being the number one eighty minute footballer in the game. He is a remarkably fit individual, and his capacity for workload is without question. That said, no way can we describe him as just a hit up merchant. Many times I've seen him give the pass or offload that leads directly to tries. He's now coupling this with some neat footwork for a guy his size, and that does trouble defense at the line. Not quite the complete package but close to it.
Though I may have had a change of heart on his playing abilities, I still question his leadership capacity. For sure he leads by example but I don't see the ability to communicate and lead others. He's too hotheaded for my liking. Much the same reasons I've never rated Thurston as a captain.
As to the over-rated tag, perhaps if you read some judgements on this forum then that description is apt. Some here seem to think he is the second coming, and they're are not taking the piss. Those of the younger generation haven't seen many footballers like Gallen, who could literally play two games back to back. Pre-interchange days they were not so uncommon. This is why they are so stunned to see someone of his capabilities.
If we see further reductions in interchange then the eighty minute footy player may once again reign in our game.
