Is it time we get player names on the back of shirts?

That would be great. I envy the sharks fans that had the chance to get a jersey with 'CSFC' on the front.

oh its ok, but given the sharks financial position i would have been fine with most companies.

However the one i bought for the missus has the CSFC and Mcgrath Foundation on the sleeves. its good.

Names and freedom in numbering should be done ASAP. We're losing a lot of potential revenue by ignoring this.

I think it definitely should be done.

Would like to see each player get given 1-25 at the start of the season. In positions. So the best players would pretty much always get the same numbers (ie Slater #1, Hayne #1 etc etc). Letting them choose their own numbers would be too "non-traditional", would be good to keep close to 1-17 as possible.

The main issue is where to fit the names with so many sponsors everywhere....

Why not have the jersey with the name ironed on permanently, and the numbers done with velcro? So if you play Fullback at 1 this week, then next week you're half-back, you get the 7.

Any player who deliberately strips the number off an opposition jersey gets automatic 4 week suspension so merkins won't start tearing them off.

That is no good if a player needs to borrow another blokes shirt. Happens all the time - for example when you have to field a player from the other side to make up the numbers. The whole lot should be velcro'd on.

Seeing as numbers are linked to positions, I'm against a different numbering system. Can take or leave names on the back

Anything that reduces "Freds plumbing" or equivalent on jerseys is a good thing.

One main front sponsor, one sleeve sponsor only.

Yes to names, no to squad numbers. I am sure a $20mill a year club can afford a few spares!

I reckon each week they should do fan polls to choose the number a player plays in.

I also reckon it's time to embrace commercialism to the nth degree.

Steggles Roosters.
Vodafone Warriors.
Durex Dragons...

It works in Japan.

I dont particularly care one way or another with the numbers.

The only demand i would make is that players keep that same number as long as they are at that club...

Do we even need numbers anymore?

Surely just put the name over the shoulders and then there's room for a back sponsor.

Names, perhaps.

Numbers, no thanks. Even though players jump from spot to spot on the field, even a basic understanding of the game is enough to identify a players general role by the number they wear.

It might get fans (and commentators) thinking a bit harder about what is happening on the field. Rather than looking at a bloke and saying "Derp he's a lock!" because he's wearing number 13, they might start to realise number 13 Glenn Stewart is playing right edge forward, number 13 Shaun Fensom is a centrefield support runner, and number 13 Frank-Paul Nuuausala is a third front rower.

They might also look more critically at how halves and fullbacks are used differently in different teams, although 'fullback' is still easy to pigeonhole due to his role in defence.
