Do you consider John Butler to be Australian or American?

I thought he was one of those hippies from Byron Bay who hates cutting his hair and has scant interest in personal hygiene?

Australian as far as I am concerned. I wasnt aware that he was born in the States until the Xavier thread, I naturally assumed he was an Aussie.

In the end though, I guess its whether he deems himself to be Australian or American that is the important thing.

he was born in california and moved to Australia when he was 11 years old. His dad's an aussie so technically he's both. However i think most would consider him an aussie. and a freaking talented one at that.

 I think you will find most people will vote him as either aussie or a yank depending on their political beliefs

kinda like the way russell crow is an aussie when he wins oscars and when he's starting fights in bars he is 'new zealand born crow' ;-)

As I said in the Xavier Rudd thread..

Angus,Malcolm and George Young were all born in Scotland. They emigrated in 1964, Angus was nine,Malcolm 10 or 11 and George in his teens.

Despite them technically being Scottish, I'm pretty sure everyone considers them to be as Australian as the Kingswood.

It's no different with John Butler. He writes about Australian issues, donates alot of money to Australian environmental groups and even has an Australian accent.

He is Australian. The fact that he won several ARIA's is proof of this. If he wasn't considered an Australian he wouldn't even be in contention.

And for the record I consider him Australian, and I'm sure he considers himself Australian, regardless of the fact he was born in San Diego.

It's really weird how so many famous Australians were born overseas.
eg.
John Farnham - England,
Jimmy Barnes - Scotland,
Johnny Diesel (Mark Lizotte) - USA,
Olivia Newton John - England,
Nicole Kidman - USA,
Mel Gibson - USA,
Holly Valance - NZ and many more...

ShireShark - I'm sure you'd love his music if you turned the lyrics off. Yes, he has different political beliefs to you, deal with it.

As far as I'm concerned, being Australian is a state of mind as much as it is your history. I could move to another country now and always consider myself an Aussie. It's all about where your mind is, and where your heart is. Even along with that, John lives in this country, owns his own record label based from this country and has only ever lived anywhere else when he was a child and had no say in it.

He's an Australian through and through. Accents don't mean ****!
