Hey guys...

just spoke with a bloke who fed me a little blurb about Kevin Locke... he mentioned he heard from someone close to Graham Lowe that Lowey was gonna make a big attempt to lure Locke over to Brooky...

i laughed it off at first... but thinking about it now... Lowey has always had big wraps on this kid... and from what ive also heard hes had a fair bit to do with his progression to the warriors.

now that Lowey is the Chief at Manly.... it wouldn't surprise me if Locke was the first bloke on his shopping list.

im wondering how long the warriors have him signed for... and how secure is his contract??

Surely the Warriors would have upgraded his contract last year?

To be honest it could be a good move for him to try his luck at an established club but they already have a very good FB

I'd love to see him at the Cowboys. Matty Bowen is out for half the season, and after two knee reconstructions he won't have the pace for fullback once he comes back.

We HAVE signed Shannon Gallant who I think is a very good fullback, but if he doesn't work out we don't have a lot of other options. And even if it does, we DESPERATELY need a decent winger.

Plus, we have a history of pinching the best young talent from the Warriors and giving really mediocre players in return:D

Signing Locke for 3-5 years should be your #1 priority. #2 should be sacking Ivan Cleary for, um, any other coach (except maybe Ricky Stuart).

yeah i thought that with Mckinnon in front of him he might be tempted... but Stewart is miles better than Mckinnon...

then i remembered something Lowey had written last year in a herald column... that Kevin Locke would be the kiwis future 7.... perhaps he could be an option to take over the manly 7 if thats where Lowey thinks his future is...

it could be a load of bullsh*t... and i may have made out of this than should have been... but the fact it was lowey made me think twice...

This is the same Graham Lowe who said that Gene Ngamu was the most promising youngster he had seen?

The same Graham Lowe who in 2003 said all the other teams might as well not turn up for the finals after our demolition of the Bulldogs.

Lowe was a very good coach and league mind, WAS being the operative word. Now he's off in his own little fantasy world half the time.

see i dont get the attack on Lowey...

the fact of the matter is hes the CEO of Manly.... you can laugh all you like at his incorrect predictions ( and believe me im with you... his comment at the start of last season about RL taking over RU was hilarious.. )... but he's in a powerful position to make a move on probably the Warriors most prized Jnr asset at the moment.

i still haven't heard if anyone knows what his contract status is...

I would not abuse Lowie if he was to lure Locke over, I would tip my hat to him as well played. I would have more of an issue against the Warriors for not doing more to keep Locke on the books. We have a very, very bad record of letting great players go while getting average Aussie hand me downs. There are a few players the Warriors should be locking in and keeping at all costs, Locke IMO is one of them.

You'd have to ask Sonny Bill that question.

But unless the Warriors agreed (in which case, they can all walk the plank now), I can't imagine the NRL allowing another club to register a player held to a contract.

The clubs seem to be able to suit themselves it would seem.

Witt and Fein are good examples.

It's the art of bargaining power, isn't it? The players could easily turn around and say no, but they seem to want to take up other opportunities before lack of first grade renders them futile. Both players from the sounds of it wanted out due to lack of first grade opportunities so probably either forewent compensation or got a very low pay out figure, much less than if the club out and out turfed them out of their payroll. I doubt either player commanded a clause that compelled the club to pick them in first grade, so their only option, as was granted, was to ask for a release from their end of the agreement. I would imagine the agreements are probably slated in a way that says the player is available for the club during period X for duties potentially including first grade performances, without saying that the club is obligated to pick them.

At the end of the day, they can only abdicate from it with a mutual decision. If the player is released for non code of conduct type breaches, unless there's a mutual decision I would think they would be obligated to make a pay out payment dependent on the term of the agreement. Similar to football, if a player requests a release he goes without payment, if a club decides to turf him they get the remainder of their contractual obligation. I would suggest it would be extremely highly unlikely that the Warriors would do it with Kevin Locke, unless his form seriously wanes.
