Is League the most hated code?

I need to clarify this, so listen carefully before you reply. I’m not asking if it’s the most unpopular in terms of crowds, number of fans or tv figures. I’m more interested in whether it attracts the most vicious attacks by those that don’t like it. There just seems to be more anti league propaganda in the media than any other sport. I kind of understand the number of stories about bad off field behavior , because that sells paper and unfortunately we provide plenty of material. However those “The Game is going to die out , It has no future ” articles don’t seem to be written much about other sports. There’s other examples of it too. Like in Brisbane, ABC news gives very little coverage to league, even though they have the same involvement with the NRL and AFL. It’s so noticeable that I think it’s a conscious decision by them ignore us. Anyway what do other people think?

I think it is borne from fear. IMO league is the best spectator sport. AFL media seem to be particularly fond of bagging league. I take it as a compliment really.

AFL is the opposite, when you are there you see how all the play unfolds but on tv it just looks like all this chipping the ball backwards crap

I don't why AFL fans would be so defensive though? They must know League isn't going to rapidly swamp Victoria and kill their code. AFL has also had decent growth nationally. Why be so fearful? I just don't understand some of these attacks on League. Is there something about the game that just annoys people?

if you like a game that often delivers a result via a shocking referee's decision, maybe 1 or 2 scores during a 90 minute period.

If soccer is better, how can they have supposedly the best referee;s at the "worlds" biggest sporting event and be a world joke. The standard was ridiculous. I for one will watch and support the socceroos, but really the game is played primarily primadonna's who seem more intent on diving that actually fighting to keep the ball. Give me league anyday.

If the media treated AFL like it does Rugby League it would be dead set struggling. RL is doing ok considering the the way it has to play second fiddle to AFL on all of the commercial networks.
It's about time channel 9 realised where it's priorities lie and started to push Rugby League a bit more and give the AFL the cold shoulder, but sadly, I don't know if Eddie will allow this to happen.

I'd say league is brilliant on the box and awesome when you are at the game.

AFL is garbage on the box and even more tedious at the game.

I agree totally. Growing the game depends so much on good publicity in the media. The flow on is exponential. For instance if the paper says a big crowd is expected at a match, its much more likley they'll get one if they say it's going to be small. People want to be part of something that is popular and a big event. Certain sections of the media certainly don't help the NRL with their coverage.

AFL is an abortion of a sport. Points for missing, no penalty for having the ball skills of a man with no arms, can't run more than 15 metres without having to bounce the ball...

No atmosphere either. 30,000 or 80,000 chronic masturbators who love to yell "ball" does not constitute atmosphere....

when a Northern Rivers Rugby League player hitting a referee is the second biggest story on the Sydney news you know something fishy is going on.

All NRL clubs should refuse to talk to anyone at 7.

That might be true at a crappy ground like the storm have.. But watching a game of league at suncorp is alot better than watching a game of AFL at the gabba. In a stadium made for the sport nothing comes close to league.

they hate us because we have survived. seriously our game has been through the absolute ringer but we always manage to come out the other side. and i think it really angers the other codes and wanky journos that we find their criticisms more amusingly pathetic than offensive.

fact is, we dont care enough about the other codes to hate them. and thats exactly what pisses them off SO much. nothing is more infuriating that hating someone who simply ignores you.
