Opinion Is Ricky Stuart the most overrated coach ever?

Ricky owned by Tedesco. If only he could sign a fullback that good...

Presser video isn't working for me. Any highlights?

You're obviously a religious Sticky losing presser man like me.

He didn't say much, something about patience from memory.

There's always a bit of gold though, I enjoyed this: "I can handle getting beaten - that's not the drama."

A man with his record, you'd expect he could.

I can understand that.

Raiders fans (please note before I go on, I like you)...how do you feel about Ricky at this stage? Does the 2-7 home record provide some worry? That's a hellishly bad record for a side notoriously difficult to beat down there.

this season has pretty gone exactly as expected. We're competing but not good enough to win the close games against good sides.
Stuart is doing a good job so far, he's recruited well and next year he's going to have the best team a Raiders fan has seen in 20 years. Sezer is a HUGE get for us. I think he and Austin are going to be a great pairing, and Josh Hodgson is one of the best hookers 5 hookers in the NRL right now.

Our biggest issue is defense. If we were even a middle of the road defensive team, we'd be a top 8 lock, but we arent, we're a bottom 3 defensive team... if Dean Pay isnt sacked at the end of this year, ill consider him a VERY lucky man. And the home record is abysmal and needs addressing, we've got no hope of getting good crowds in with 6 wins from our last 26 home games.

All in all, he's done his job so far. Next year though is make or break for him. He's got a really good squad next year, with injuries being kind i think a Wighton-Austin-Sezer-Hodgson spine should be a top 6 team.

He's had his 2 years to get his squad and whip them into shape, he's got his squad and it's a good one. No more excuses, this team needs to start delivering from next year on wards.
If they deliver a top 6 finish, he should be extended for another 2-3 years.
If he misses the 8 again (injuries permitted), i'd like to see Stuart moved into some kind of GM Gould style role along side Don Furner, they seem to be a pretty handy team in regards to building a team and structuring the salary cap, and get a coach in who can finish the job. Too much can change too quickly and we cant afford to waste the team he's assembled.

This might be an unfair generalisation of the man, but I honestly don't think Stuart would be able to work effectively in a GM-Coach relationship, regardless of the role he's fulfilling, be it the GM or the coach. It ended in tears when he and Gould tried working together at the Roosters. I just don't think he'd be able to let go of the coaching reins if he was appointed as a GM. On the other side of the coin, I don't think he'd respond to well to having a GM overseeing his footy operations if he was the head coach, especially after his experience I mentioned at the Roosters...

As for Dean Pay - I think you're bang on with your assessment. Defence was one of the areas I thought the Eels might improve on when Stuart took over in 2013 and Pay was his assistant, instead we were getting lapped more than ever. I guess it goes to show that just because you're really good at something, it doesn't mean you'll be able to successfully impart those skills on to others, just as great footy players in general don't necessarily make great coaches, and conversely, some average first graders go on to be great coaches....

Ricky is going ok. Its not an easy club to get results at. Most of the supposed top coaches wouldn't take a challenge like it and risk ruining their careers.

I think Stuart probably knows that this is his last chance at a coaching career, if he doesnt get results in canberra and he's sacked, he's got absolutely no chance of getting another gig as a HC, so i think knowing that, having roots down in canberra, if it comes to a point where we think he's not up to it as a HC, but we're giving him another gig in the organisation so he's still collecting a good pay cheque and doesnt have to uproot his family etc... i think he'd take it

He wouldnt have 5 years ago but he knows this is it for him, if he knocked back that kind of career change, then we'd sack him and he'd be out on his arse with no real way avenue for a job. I think he's smart enough to figure out moving into a role like that and collecting a pay cheque to focus on things he's good at, is better than being out of work

"Anything I say youse blokes will just make into an excuse so write what you want"

That will probably get another run. Never has another coach ever openly referenced his own press so often (even though they never go hard on him)

It's almost a comedy routine, the way he takes it so hard, struggles to express himself, acts bitter and defeated. Listening on the radio I heard Croker speaking the same way, it's obviously contagious.

We've lost about 10 games by 7 points or less, whilst most reasonable fans knew their season ended weeks ago, even they know now it's over. Do you expect it not to hurt? To put in the way they have all year and find the seasons over with literally 7-8 games they can pin point and say "gee, we should have and could have won those games and if we did"

We were a good team, as our attacking record shows, but just not good enough, this was a tough season, one that will hopefully provide some oxygen for their fire in 2016

Yeah I'm looking forward to next season. We'll have the best spine we've had since the 90s and I'm sure we'll learn to turn those close games around. I like the side that Stuart's built and it's heading in the right direction.

There's a strange obsession with Ricky on this forum. Desperately sitting around, hoping you get some entertainment from his press conferences. I understand he is a dick, but a lot of you come across like he has f**ked your missus.

No just the luckiest. He is a charlatan who has mindf###ed his media mates to going public about what a great coach he is according to them. That team he has now is a top four side. Bellamy, Robbo or Maguire would win a comp with them. They are big, fast, strong and skilled yet they cannot win at home!
