Opinion Is Ricky Stuart the most overrated coach ever?

Imagine if fining Thurston was a thing. He would rack up more than Stuart.

Not sure about that but after they finish their coaching careers I'd like to see Hasler and Sticky on NRL 360 or Matty Johns may be a better time slot, discussing the refs performance from each game.

Even better if they were in each game like the bunker.

Yet Stuart got them higher than any other coach before last year and had them as a genuine premiership threat.

to be fair when a team clicks any team can go on a run. momentum is a huge factor; 05 Tigers, 09 Parrramatta both shit sides that went on a run and come back to earth the following year, such runs have nothing to do with coaching.

How Austin wasn't dropped early in the season has me beat; how Eddrick Lee wasn't dropped last year has me beat. Good coaches can make big calls this joker can't. Look what Bennett done to Hunt, done him wonders.

I would say Stuart did make some big calls at Canberra and it paid off for them last year. That cleanout at Parramatta did improve them to an extent as well.

and he spent two minutes whinging about a decision being sent to the bunker and being ruled as no try

and that decision was in his favour seeing it was Melbourne who had potentially scored it

I'm not convinced the referee didn't get it 1000% right either
Would not have shocked me or would I heve complained if they went the other way

The only thing that improved Parra was that myth leaving.

He signed Norman, Peats and Gower who have all gone on to be good players for your mob (in Peats case when he was an Eel) he also gave Radradra his big break and he has been your best winger since Grothe Snr. None of those 12 that he sacked have gone on to anything and they were deadwood that was going nowhere.

Stuart took over the Kearney f**ked Eels that had Sandow, Tonga, Walker ect on big dollars who were busts. He couldn't turn them around in a year.

Gower was signed by BA, he paid overs for Norman and Peats and got lucky.

Most of those 12 were off contract and the ones that weren't we had to pay to play elsewhere. No wonder we had to cheat to try and compete.

And wow he gave Semi a start!!

What amazing insight, he waited till nearly the end of the season to give him a run. What a genius!!

He gave up on 2013 and Arthur as a rookie coach showed what a myth he is the next season.

Stuart is showing what a shit coach he really is and anyone continually sticking up for him is a complete moron.

I was adamant last year that the Raiders overachieved on the back of Hodgsons form and a poor standard of competition and their performances this year have just reinforced that for me.

There are also 2 aspects of coaching: one is being able to identify players and build a squad, and the other is actually being able to coach what you have. Stuart defiently made a couple of good purchases, there's no denying that.

He falls down big time at the actual coaching part though. Although I think the Raiders squad is a bit overrated and they overachieved a bit last year, with that roster they should be playing a lot better than they are. The size of their forward pack alone should be enough to bully any other team out of the game.

They seem lazy, fat and unmotivated. They don't seem a happy camp in general and you wouldn't see players abusing each other on the field at a club like Melbourne. He also doesn't seem to be able to utilise his players' strengths (either that or he just doesn't give a shit about their development). He throws a shit load of money at a kid like Joe Tapine but then plays him out of position.

Raiders would be smart to sack him ASAP - the current squad has the potential to be successful with good coaching and motivation but you want it to happen before more skill is coached out of them or they start heading for the doors.

Watching Sticky's post-matchers has turned into the NRL equivalent of Arsenal FanTV for mine...can't miss the latest episode!

At seasons' end, somebody needs to put together a compilation of all Ricky's post-match press conferences from this season- all the highlights- with short reaction clips in between each of them. Don't know how long it'd take but it's well worth the effort- and anybody who does it and posts the final product here will have my everlasting admiration. I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one!
