Yes but many a coach at the time (iirc Phil Gould was one) said you could give it back to him, as it often as not it would throw Ricky off his game. They said the one playedr to avoid sledging at all costs was Laurie Daley, as all it would do is piss him off and fire him up so much he'd make you pay everytime.

to be fair, for most good coaches (in any sport) the presser is just theatre. You often learn more by what the coaches don’t say. Still boggles my mind that so many journos of a certain rag love him considering how he treats the press with disdain.

Truth is when Ricky got sacked from Cronulla in 2010 and got the NSW gig in 2011 his manager John Fordham and Ricky went around to all main league journos for the telegraph to smooth things over as Ricky had a feisty relationship at the time to rebuild the relationship and have been best mates ever since.

Especially Paul Kent

Ricky did a weekly article with the Tele in 2011 & 2012 as well.

Whatever Fordham did weather it was wine and dine them for months has clearly worked.
