Is there any reason we can’t challenge for the title in 2025?

After making the grand final in 2022 Parramatta has endured a rough couple of seasons to the point where most pundits see us making the bottom half of the 8 at best. We aren’t really seen as a genuine premiership threat. What do the fans here think? I think it’s a bit of a folly to use the last couple of seasons as a predictor for this season.
Firstly Moses is now genuinely considered an elite halfback after dominating at origin and playing for the kangaroos. He wasn’t in that category in 2023 and was injured for most of 2024.
Secondly this is the best backline we’ve had in ages. When at full strength we have Lomax, Penisini and Addo-Carr who are all genuine strike players. Critics might say Lomax will flop at centre because he’s a winger but they were saying the same thing about Tahu back in the day.
Finally I think our pack has the potential to be underrated. The likes of Paulo, Ofahengaue, Matterson and Hopgood have played origin and you never know which youngster/new recruit is going to surprise (that includes the spine and backs as well for that matter). Maybe we don’t have as many star forwards as we’d like but I’d argue it’s a much weaker comp now. Melbourne are the premiership favourites and I see plodder after plodder on their roster. I think Penrith are going to miss JFH a lot as well.
I would agree that we’re still relatively weak at hooker and that could count against us. Then again Penrith have won multiple premierships with Mitch Kenny who isn’t the most creative hooker.
Anyhoos is it beyond the realms of possibility that we challenge for the title this season if everyone is fully fit at the business end of the season? Or do we have a vital ingredient message which means it’s too early to be thinking about it this year? Are there really that many teams with vastly superior rosters than us? I’d say this is the closest the comp has looked in ages (even though in practice it may not pan out that way).

My way of looking at it this year is we are massively under the radar. We’re coming off the back of two woeful seasons, our captain has left and been replaced by a Rookie, new rookie coach and staff.

Most of the NRL public and media will look at these facts and think ‘rebuilding year’ and it is, usually these years you see marked improvement but the real results may not flow until the seasons prior. I like being under the radar, there’s not as much pressure on us now the more people that write us off the better.

It’s only early days, we had a positive pre-season and we’ve won one trial game against a team that I doubt will do well this year.

Something does feel like it’s brewing but this team has to go and prove it now. One thing is for sure our depth is going to be as good as it’s been in a long time, I can’t fault the recruitment and we are finally starting to see fruit from the efforts that have been put into development.

I do agree the comp is wide open this year. Penrith will be hard to beat again but will miss Luai and JFH, most importantly though they will miss Penrith Park (this is being massively undersold imo). Storm have a class spine and a freak of a coach but I agree there are plenty of players in their top 17 that I wouldn’t have in our top 17.

I’d say those two and the Skarks are the only teams I’m sure will make the 8. In all honesty it wouldn’t totally surprise me if any of the remaining 14 teams filled the last 5 spots, I think it is going to be unbelievably competitive week to week.

It’s a long season and plenty can happen, injuries, suspensions always play there part.

I’m being realistic and predicting an improved season, I’d like to think we are going to competing to make the 8 at least. But as I said something is brewing under Ryles and I’m excited where the club is heading over the next few years.

I would like to think we could win the comp in any given year.
my prediction is that we will finish between 6th and 10th.
I think we still lack a quality 9. Hands is competent and I liked what I saw of Riley Smith last night, but I feel we are weaker than half the comp in the hooker role.
I also think that Iongi looks very good, but has only played 1 NRL game and it’s only natural that he will most likely lack consistency at the start of his career.
The other big issue will be keeping Moses on the field

I'd say the reasons are that we are undermanned and have an inexperienced coach.

Time will change that as the group is moulded into a better squad.
Stuart, Robinson and Hagan won premierships as first time coaches so it can be done even if the coach is inexperienced. Where do you think we are undermanned?

Some may say that we probably need a higher level of luck than some other highly ranked clubs.

I think just for us to be competing, we need Ryles to prove to be an NRL coach, we’ll need Iongi and probably 2-3 other rookies to prove to be NRL players, we’ll need Lomax to at least be good (same as last year would be better), we’ll need to ignore the media ramblings e.g. Drown, we need to be healthy e.g. Moses, we need to stay away from stupid shit e.g. JAC/Drown and even after all that we still need to win the actual games

If we have luck with injuries and the team all gel under Ryles there is nothing saying we can't win it.

We saw yesterday that we have some pretty decent backups this year as well.

I think we can challenge for the title every year - it's the beauty of being a fan.

But I genuinely think our roster is pretty strong across the park - probably our biggest area of concern is our pack; it is an aging forward pack, and questions arise surrounding our props.

But we have very good halves, very good backs, and genuine strike power.

Hard to not see us in the 8, imo.

Where do you think we are undermanned?

in two places, the backs and the forwards

we have some class players and some we are yet to see but as much as I would love to see us in the GF, maybe in the next few years I think is more realsistic

Who are we gonna play on an edge?

Tualagi will be one. Who is the other? Lane? Carty? - i dont think either of these are maintaining form .... Guymer was mentioned previously. No way he is an edge. ... Williams? Again, dont think he is an edge.

Im optimistic about Hands. And Ryley Smith looked promising.

It's just the odd bad read, the arm grab in the middle that will stop us from winning more than we lose. The top teams will do less of them and that’s why a good year for us will be mid table. Making the 8 will be an exceptional result.

If we can make the top 8, we can challenge for the title again.

Consistency is something we have lacked for many years imo, having not had enough consistency to make the top 8 in the past two years, and in the year we have made the top 8 lacking the consistency to go as deep as desired during those four weeks of finals.

If Ryles can motivate these professionals better than his predecessor to perform consistently, then we'll be in the top 8, and in with at least a show...

I think our chance of winning is greater than zero. Maybe five percent chance, at best?

Our weakness is likely to be defence, centres and edge forwards.

Penisini needs to start reaching his potential, Lomax is a bit untested at centre in defence, and our edge forward starters (and rotation, as I don't think we've got anyone we can trust in that role for 80mins) is still tbc.
