Yeah it was a stupid move to come out and say that, but it was part of him accepting responsbility for it and admitting what he did on the field was stupid. One quote like that is worth him being dropped for 4-5 tests? No way.
There are only 2 definitely scheduled tests next year, aren't there? Anzac, plus 1 at end of year vs Roos. And 1 possible test if England tours.

If England tour I was under the impression that it would a 3 match series. That would mean ANZAC test, end of year test against Aus, possible 3 match series against England and then also maybe a game against a Pacific 'all stars' team as well? If the England tour doesn't happen then it will only be 3 tests for the year, but kinda doesn't really matter to me. I just don't see why Luke should already be written of from being selected in the side for those tests, some as far away as almost a year.

If his form warrants selection, select him.

Then Kearney should pull him aside and tell him to pull his head in.

Honestly, I feel like the real issue in this is the lack of leadership offered from Kearney and Marshall.

Micistm -- I don't understand your POV about Isaac Luke admitting what happened at all. Are you suggesting he should pretend he didn't try to break Rangi's leg? You do know he wasn't bragging, right? He was coming clean, and giving himself sh*t for being a grub -- and rightly so. The act was stupid as sh*t -- regretting it, and admitting he is wanting to change his behaviour isn't.

Kearney DID that. At the start of the tourno, Kearney talked to him about stepping up, as one of the senior players. Being a role model for the young ones. His response was some dumb questionable tactics.
Kearney tried again prior to the game in question vs England: Pull your head in, role model, senior player, etc.
His response was to attempt to break an opposition players leg. And then to state it was his intention to break the guys leg. How good does that reflect on the team? Should he receive better treatment than if he succeeded and actually injured the guy?

What's Kearney supposed to do? The immature dropkick is a law unto himself and clearly does not listen. So, if leadership is to be used, IMO he's had his chances.

This is something that is clearly polarising fans; you either think it's not a big deal, or it is. I'm of the latter opinion, that says this is something that requires further action from the Kiwi camp- if they have the balls. I think this is a complete disgrace and an embarrassing reflection on the Kiwi brand. Just my view.

All this 'don't pick him' stuff is knee jerking. If he pulls his head in over the off-season, is in top form for Souths and doesn't get into any trouble, he gets picked. We're not exactly bulging with quality hookers, and he certainly is one at top form.

I get that. But IMO that still doesn't mean it's okay after a group hug. It requires IMO further action by the Kiwi camp- which to my knowledge hasn't said anything in response to this. Then from there- you will see how genuine things are by his reaction and attitude. He will either knuckle down, clean up his act and fight his way back, bigger and better- if as he says, the kiwi jersey means that much...or he will have a wee tanty and the toys will go out of the cot.
I'd be interested which way he'd go...and the way he's been in the past few months, the direction would be hard to predict.

People get banned for booze violations. IMO this is worse. An attempt to injure and a confession in that regard.:?

I do concede that should that happen- he genuinely changes his form and more importantly his attitude- I'd like him back in the team. But at this stage I'm really disappointed in the guy, and the possible reputation he's giving the kiwis. He's not the only one though.

Don't get me wrong, I'm disappointed in him too. Mostly because of the point you made originally that it's all well and good to be fired up - but we never showed any signs of being fired up enough to win a tournament. Only to twist a leg and have a few beers.

I get the feeling he'll learn from it and grow up.

Should have Paul Gallen been dropped from NSW and Aus for a year when he tried to pull stiches out of Lafranchis head a couple of years back?

That's a fair point...was going to ask how some would feel if this was an Aussie, or Pom, that had attempted to break the leg of one of our guys.
Say, an Aussie attempted to break Forans leg to teach him a lesson for picking NZ over NSW...then openly said thats exactly what they were trying to do.
I understand that many might think banning is too harsh, but IMO too many are just shrugging and thinking it's no big deal, maybe cutting some slack because he's a Kiwi. At this stage he's been spoken to several times about reeling in the emotion, and he cannot control himself.
I'll leave it there, there's not much else to add. The arguement does around in circles and you either think the guy should be disciplined by the Kiwi camp or you don't.
If banning isn't the way-and maybe not-what are other suggestions to get this guy on the straight and narrow- considering he has been spoken to a few times, he has ignored it, and it's ended up at this sorry conclusion.

One last thing- I was a fan of Lukes, a big fan. Probably the main reason I'm so appalled by him atm. If he sorts his shit out and gets back with good form and the crap out of his game, I'll be as happy as everyone else.;-)

Okay, I understand now. I share most of these views. I also think he did the right thing about answering honestly about grubby play. I wouldn't not select him for this.

I remember Mick Crocker did similar on Locke earlier this season, and nothing was made of it. Difference being Crocker would never step up and admit (in dismay) what he was trying to do... Although, that's two Rabbitohs doing the same thing. I wonder what Rusty puts in his milkshakes?
