Doesn't mean success. Look at Man U and Chelsea. Almost half a billion in players between them and still struggle to score.

You have a point, but truth be told, the big 4-5 dominate each year.
This year, to date mind you, has been an enigma.

No, I definitely wasn't, because I was not alive then!

Back then, you had to play for the district you lived in so the rules were very different and definitely favoured St George.

My gripe, is that the NRL boasts that each year any team can win, when realistically under the current system, only 4 (Brisbane, Roosters, Bulldogs and Souths) will fight it out year on year.

Ummm, 2 of those teams havent won in either 9 or 11 years bro...

Not to mention the reigning premiers are not one of those teams...

Only 4 teams have won the epl in the last 20 years!!
And 15 out of those 20 has been Chelsea and United.

Blackburn won it in 94-95. Times have changed. Gone are the days were skill won u most games. These days its all about how athletic your team is. Look at the American team in the last world cup. No skill but could run all day. Obviously money helps but i do believe if u have a great coach it makes a difference. They understand the capability of their team and play to its strength. Eg: Hinnik with the Aussies, Popovic with western sydney and the Greek team that won the European cup.

Regardless of who wins the premierships the fact remains that when a star player comes on the market the majority of the league are out of the hunt every single time.

We think we have it tough, well the likes of Raiders etc aren't even competing!

The fact is there are only so many bonafide superstars going around the NRL and generally it's the same clubs snapping them up when they become available.

Put it this way, if Greg Inglis became a free agent tomorrow and Raiders, Parramatta and Titans all offered him a $1.5million a year deal, but then the Broncos or Bulldogs come along with a $700k a year deal where do you think he ends up??

The NRL wants clubs all clubs to be viable and competitive, and yet they enable a marketplace where that can't happen.

Titans are already struggling to stay afloat and can't even give away tickets to their games, yet the NRL just sat back and watched while Titans' most exciting player and possibly biggest draw card walks out on them and into the biggest, best established club in the NRL.

Bet u were"nt complaining when saints won 11 in a row.....

During the record run many of the St George greats actually signed on for a lot less money than they could get elsewhere.

Simply put it was a lot easier to get to rep football (the ultimate prize) from a club with good cattle than from being loyal to a lower ranked club.

Interesting that rep footballers were actually "invited" to play for their country and other than travelling costs there was very very little remuneration. The great Billy Smith once gave an insightful interview on the subject after JT suggested that the rep money should be a lot higher.

TPA's of a sort were alive and well back then as some of the players were given a brewery truck and a set delivery run so as they could earn additional income. A brewery run in those days was like a cab license plate today "gold" and had enormous resale value.

Len Kelly once told me that at given times even when some of the superstars of the day asked for more money Frank Facer would "not so politely" say that if they wanted to elsewhere go by all means do so.

That was evidenced by them not losing a great player by choice until they didn't resign Kevin Ryan. "Kandos" left and went to Canterbury.

Ultimately he was the Captain Coach who employed the St George model of football against his old club and the great run came to an end.

Roberts no doubt is getting a good deal in one form or another and his chances of playing high level rep football are extremely enhanced by the decision he has made.

He has made a sound commercial decision as so many have done before him and in the end hoepfully we will all cheer him if and when he wears the Green & Gold.

If you were offered a comfortable wage to work in a comfortable environment should you be forced to work in a worse environment for more money?

Why are Bulldogs not included in the top 4 despite being runners up twice in four years?
