Italy v Scotland Euro Cup

Yeah very, it would have been nice for them to at least use the majority of the players that have won them the last 2 European Shields with maybe a few semi-pros coming in. Instead there was a bunch of debutants, no doubt due to them being quickest off the mark to fill the gaps.

This is why int league is a joke, unless they could get the aussies guys off there arses and give a hand rather than play for the italian aussies what a joke this will do more harm than good and these fans won't return.
Russia would have made a game of it.

Russia would not have made a game of it, they would have got thrashed just like they have for every game against this quality of opposition for years.

It wouldn't have been 100 points though. If they played to their best they could keep it to 30-40 points IMO. When was the last Russia played Ireland, Scotland or Wales in Russia? Would be interesting to see how much of a home advantage they have. Scotland V Russia in moscow could have been a reasonably close game IMO.

Ireland played in Russia in the Qualifiers last world cup in 06 score was 50-12 Ireland.

It would not have been a close game whatsoever, probs not 100 points but not close

38 points is a long way off 104 though. 50-12 does very little, if any damage to the Cup's Image, 104-0 and 82-0 in the first week does terrible damage to the tournament's credibility.

They played in 2007 and the score was 58-18 so 40 point margin in Ireland, I seem to recall Russia V Lebanon was fairly close, 14 point margin or close to it? If Russia turned up I wouldn't rule out a reasonable close game, not a 2,4,6 point game but 20-30 margin. At worst it would be a 60 point margin IMO.

I agree mate, but I'm not disputing the fact that these two scores have done some damage to the tournaments credibility, I'm just saying that whether Russia are in or not we would be still looking at similar scorelines - large, comfortable victorys for whoever Russia played.

What should have been done here is a little common sense used by the administrators, how difficult would it have been to put a cap of say 8 pro/semi-pro players used in the games against Serbia and Italy, sure its convoluted but it would have

A, made the scorelines far more respectable

B, Improved the domestic players in Irleand and Scotlands squad, playing alongside the 8 allowed pros

C, Forced all sides to name more domestic players in their squads, even if they only are used for these games which are clearly being played as Pros v ams

Point is scotland and ireland are expoiting the rules, they have no intention of players locals if the rules let them. While the likes of france and wales develop talent the hard way, these guys are doing it the easy way.
Russia where very improved during there rlwc 08 qualifiers, they just need to get there sh*t together for goodness sake.
It is very sad by the score in ltaly, given the support is better than the usual 500 that attend irish games and 800 that attend scots games.

I dont agree mate Wales and France arent "developing talent the hard way" France has had RL played in the country for 60 odd years and Wales are being given every conceivable leg up to get the kids in Wales playing the game, which is great. But Scotland and Ireland have no real reason to develop talent, If the had a club in the english leagues and they knew that without some home based development they wouldnt be allowed to enter the 4N you might see more done in Ireland and Scotland.

Also we see Scotland and Irlenad losing enough G/P players to the England side, I dont feel this is "easy" for them, even if I dont have much sympathy for them in that regard.

France have also exploited the residency rule in their time and also in the upcoming 4N.

I agree, atleast they would offer more than putdown practise for the opposition.

Hopefully under their new managment they can get themselves in order and be looking to win this tournament in 10-15 years.
