The name 'rugby league' seems to be one of the major stumbling blocks in the international expansion of the game. It causes massive confusion and crazy assumptions.

If the sport is to ever succeed we need to change the name.

Discuss.

The answer is surely education rather than tossing out a name with nearly 100 years of tradition?

I think we just need to make more people aware of the following article (translated from Japanese RL website):

* Two Rugbies...
The sport which presently is called Rugby exists two << the Rugby league (13 human systems) with Rugby unions (15 human systems) >>. In other words two cords/codes (rule) it exists. The beginning which the Rugby have no other choice but to originally one, keeps separating to two goes back also 1895. Those where the individual professional league starts in this year England north section became opportunity and kept separating to present two Rugbies. At this occurrence is called in history of Rugby "great divide (great separation)" with, this in the machine Rugby two types (organization) reaches the point where it exists. It is the Rugby football league which designates the England north section as base and the Rugby football union which designates the England southern part as base. That reaches the point where it is known us to be good is made the ear the Rugby league which (13 human systems), the Rugby union (15 human systems) as afterwards. Two Rugbies each one kept spreading to world nations gradually in these 100 years, also rule changed little by little. The especially Rugby league to be quicker than the Rugby union promoted professional conversion. Depending, playing attack (attack) with defense (defense) by being emphasized, observing, (doing, it is pleasant, seeing, as is pleasant and) been able to enjoy which it kept modifying rule.

... I think that clears it up nicely!

we should never lose the name rugby league. there are two sports of rugby, one played under league rules and one under union rules. union does not own the term rugby.

Rugby league has been through a hell of a lot over the years. It is a rugby code played by 13 men,we should not be ashamed of that ,its history and the knocks it has taken over the past 100 years.
The name to remain unchanged.

Fortunately this bad bad idea hasn't come up as often as it has in recent years.

I think we should keep "Rugby League"

but really focus on the word league

eg "world of league"

International league board

etc etc etc

but formally the sport should stay as rugby league

I agree.

The sport is rugby league - not league.

It might seem like a small point but a lot of blood, sweat and tears have been spilt over this difference since 1907.

Calling one game rugby and one game league is just pure laziness. Sadly, its very Australian to abbreviate a name

The Channel 9 commentators do it all the time.

Its not a hard concept.

There's rugby league and there's rugby union.

Errrr no, because soccers got that name sewn up.

As any true Queenslander will tell you, when you talk about "footy" in this State, you mean rugby league, not soccer (or any other code for that matter).

True, soccer is known as football in most parts of the world - emphasis on "most". Just not here in the Sunshine State.

And long may the difference continue...
