Panthers Executive General Manager Phil Gould AM today met with coach Ivan Cleary and informed him the club has terminated the final year of his contract, effective immediately.

"Ivan Cleary has done a tremendous job in his four years at the Panthers," Mr Gould said.

"He has laid the foundation for the future and we are enormously grateful for his contribution to the club.

"We wish Ivan, his wife Rebecca and his family all the very best for the future."

What position do we offer him though?

First grade coach - give Cappy the flick or keep him as another assistant?
Coaching Director? (whatever that is)
Or play him at centre when Konrad leaves??

Always said McFadden deserves 2016, but yeah, Cleary best coach we ever had and can't see what he did wrong at Penrith....

Here's what I'm doing if I'm Jim...

I'd ring Ivan in a couple of weeks, being sure to give him immediate space to let it sink in and respect that him and his family are probably a bit shaken by it. And then, also having a conversation knowing he is a very private guy who isn't going to leak anything anywhere - he never has. I'd say sorry to hear the news, and not be too interested as to why (at this stage).

Then I'd say it's no secret that whilst our coach is contracted until 2017 we won't tolerate continued failure.

At that stage, say have you thought about your options/is anything on the table/would you be open to returning to Auckland at any stage? You were obviously allowed to go in 2011 but that was under previous management, and we respect you as a fine coach who achieved great results.

Then the ball is in his court. I wouldn't offer him anything but head coach. You know he wants to be that, and if you continue to commit to McFadden you have to give him every opportunity until you say enough's enough.

I find it impossible to believe that Ivan has been sacked based on 2015. Granted I don't know how Gould operates, but I refuse to believe he could look at an injury ravaged 2015 and let it completely cloud the judgement of a previous year where they damn near made a GF.

Someone on the main NRL forum said what I believe, that Gould must think he knows something about Ivan's future. Like he's planning to come to us in 2017, or somewhere else, or that something is afoot. I truly don't believe you'd drop a proven finals achiever like Ivan for either Garth Brennan, a completely unproven NRL entity, or my god someone like Griffin who has been rumoured. If you do, like us with Bluey, it's absolute inevitable burn.

I'm also not sure Ivan would uproot his family for Auckland again. I don't know his family but I know his son is in Sydney-based rep teams, would he head the other way again? I'd love him back but it's a massive question mark.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!!!! - NO NO NO - keep him away from the warriors, dont let him anywhere near the place. He cant coach progressive teams. He steadies ships and thats it. He has no capability what so ever to get a football side to the next level.

He is not the best coach the warriors ever had - that was Daniel Anderson who coached brilliant football before unfortunately over-sizing the players body-shapes which backfired. If cleary is the best coach we have had in 20 years then seriously quit and find another team.

Honestly guys, how the hell could you want clearly back, that truly F@cking scares me.

Unlikely that any club is going to be jumping on Ivan just yet - everyone (bar MAYBE the Tigers) have their coaches settled for next year. If Cappy isn't performing next year, I could see the approach being made (as an aside, hopefully his son would come with him).

Given the current situation I just can't see an immediate link up - the timing doesn't make sense. That said, Penrith sacking him didn't make much sense either. He wasn't their problem - and who are they going to replace him with? Toovey/Walkers?

I'm going to take the calm, reasoned approach here...

Progressive: favoring or advocating progress, change, improvement, or reform. Ie taking the Warriors from rabble in 05 to finals pretty much every year then the GF in 2011. That's progressive. Taking Penrith from the same spot on the ladder to a shandy off the GF in 2014. That's progressive. That's not 'steadying' a ship, that's moving it forward.

You say Anderson was a better coach, based on what? Both made a GF, both got outclassed. Cleary didn't have a 'unfortunately' tactic year. He had Mick Watson's f**k up 06 season, then the 09 Sonny Fai season. By the way, over-sizing is not 'unfortunate' - it's a tactic f**k up. Unfortunate is a salary cap breach you weren't a part of, and one of your finest young men dying.

You what though? For some of us it might just be as simple as wanting to play finals football again. I know I'm bored of not being there. Maybe we'd take 6th and out over finding out who the next coach to take us to 9th-11th is.
