Irrespective of what happens in trial??
I'm glad he's going to trial, that way the courts will decide if he is guilty or not, but "if" he is found not guilty I think he needs to know who his friends are [or were] in tough times. You don't abandon your child if you believe in them, as the Dragons obviously do.
The Dragons have deservedly been very supportive to Jack for the past 2 years. Nobody can envisage how much longer this trial could continue in the legal courts with appeals.
It could be another year before Jack can get on the field again if found not guilty.
Sometimes a change in scenery might be the best outcome for both player & club in order to heel.

Jack de Belin to face trial over alleged aggravated sexual assault
NRL star Jack de Belin will face trial in November over an alleged aggravated sexual assault in 2018.

Sources at the club said they would speak to de Belin in coming days and indicate they want him to stay in the bubble and help the club's unlikely finals assault.

Given he cannot play for the rest of the season, de Belin wouldn't be subject to the harsh measures in place to keep the competition going if he was to apply to leave St George Illawarra's bubble.

Senior Dragons officials have previously spoken of de Belin's influence at training on the squad - in particular younger players - and want that to continue through the final weeks of the year, in which caretaker coach Dean Young is auditioning for the top job.

There will be no finals games for the Dragons.

I say give Young and Sheppard an early retirement pay day and have Flanagan work with Wane until seasons end with to tall job of sorting out the player squad for 2021 and beyond.

NZ Warriors reported target Jack de Belin to stand trial on sexual assault charges

Jack de Belin is reportedly being targeted by the Warriors subject to him being acquitted.
Jack de Belin, who has been touted as a potential signing for the NZ Warriors next season, will face trial in November, accused of the aggravated sexual assault of a woman in 2018.

De Belin learned of the ruling at Wollongong Local Court on Friday. He and his co-accused have pleaded not guilty.

The St George Illawarra Dragons star has not played since 2018 after becoming the first player stood down under the NRL's no-fault stand-down policy.

Jack de Belin continues to train with the Dragons during their 2020 campaign.
Despite that, the off-contract de Belin has reportedly fielded a lucrative offer for next season from the Warriors.

The Warriors, who have already signed teammate Euan Aitken, are believed to have tabled a deal for the former State of Origin representative which would net him close to a A$200,000-a-year pay rise on his current deal.

NZ Warriors chief executive Cameron George told Stuff in June he had no comment and nothing to add on reports the Warriors would table an offer to the St George-Illawarra forward, from the beginning of the 2021 season, if he was acquitted.

However, incoming coach Nathan Brown told Nine’s The Sunday Footy Show this month that de Belin would be “an outstanding” acquisition for the Warriors if the Dragons and New South Wales prop is acquitted of rape charges.

De Belin's rape trial is set to begin on November 2 following lengthy delays due to sensitive legal arguments, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

From above .......what would be the most likely reason the delays occurred until yest ?

1. national security - unlikely

3. potential harm to informers - unlikely ?
4. legal professional privilege material will be revealed? - most likely?

Dragons re-sign de Belin amid court trial

Marc Churches

The St George Illawarra Dragons have confirmed Jack de Belin will have a spot on the team's roster for the 2021 NRL season, pending the outcome of his court trial scheduled for November.

De Belin's NRL career last week copped a brutal blow after it was determined that his aggravated sexual assault case would proceed to trial.

Despite being stood down under the NRL's 'no fault' stand down policy, the 29-year-old has continued to train with the squad, collecting full pay, in excess of $600,000-a-season, while being unavailable for selection.

The Dragons announced in a statement today that de Belin had agreed in principle to a new contract beyond the 2020 season.

"The Dragons can confirm that de Belin has agreed in principle to re-sign with the Dragons beyond the 2020 season, pending the outcome of his imminent court matter," the statement read.

"The terms of de Belin's contract will remain confidential while the matter remains before the court."

Earlier this season, future Warriors coach Nathan Brown revealed the club had intentions of signing de Belin to a contract reportedly worth around the $750,000-a-year ball park.

Jack De Belin agrees to stick with Dragons
  • r0_0_800_600_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

St. George Illawarra have agreed to in-principle terms with Jack de Belin beyond 2020.
Jack de Belin will stay with St George Illawarra if he is able to play in the NRL beyond the end of his sexual assault trial.

The Dragons confirmed on Wednesday that de Belin had reached an in-principle agreement that he would remain with the club beyond the end of this season.

The contract is pending the former NSW State of Origin lock's trial, which is set to begin on November 2.

De Belin will be off contract at the end of this year, and was set to attract interest from the Warriors.

However he has decided to remain with the Dragons, with the club having debuted him in 2011 and stuck by him since he was charged in December 2018.

"The Dragons can confirm that de Belin has agreed in principle to re-sign with the Dragons beyond the 2020 season, pending the outcome of his imminent court matter," the club said in a statement.

"The terms of de Belin's contract will remain confidential while the matter remains before the court."

He and his co-accused Callan Sinclair have pleaded not guilty to the aggravated sexual assault of a 19-year-old inside a Wollongong apartment.

De Belin hasn't played in the NRL since the end of 2018, having been the highest-profile player stood down under the NRL's no-fault policy.

At the time of his charge he was one of the game's premier locks, having been at the centre of the Dragons' early charge up the ladder that year.

Meanwhile the Saints have also moved to hose down speculation Ben Hunt could be shopped out of the club.

The Dragons halfback-turned-hooker only took up an option to stay at the club for an extra season earlier this year, and remains locked in until the end of 2023.

"The Dragons' recruitment committee have never discussed the prospect of releasing the Queensland and Australia representative to another club," the Dragons said.

Dragons agree to terms with Jack de Belin for 2021

St George Illawarra and Jack de Belin have announced an in-principle agreement for the star forward to re-sign beyond 2020 pending the outcome of his upcoming criminal case.

De Belin's current contract expires just days before he is due back in Wollongong District Court, but the Dragons have confirmed in principle agreement for him to remain at the club next season should he be permitted to resume playing again in 2021.

The NSW Origin lock has been unavailable to play under the NRL's no fault stand down rule for the past 18 months but still fielded significant interest from the Warriors recently.

The Dragons released a statement on Wednesday night confirming the agreement, with the "terms of de Belin's contract will remain confidential while the matter remains before the court."

The club also refuted a report that Ben Hunt could be moved on before his long-term deal expires as "completely inaccurate".

Meanwhile, CEO Ryan Webb has vowed to establish St George Illawarra's identity once and for all with a decision on Paul McGregor's successor expected to come in the next few days.

Thursday's scheduled interviews with Dean Young, Anthony Griffin and David Furner, and the appointment of a head coach largely dictates how the Dragons rebuild, with Webb describing the looming call as "the most important decision the club has made in recent times" in a recent members update.

An emphasis on discipline, defence, developing young talent and hailing from a successful culture have been outlined as key qualities needed from the club's next coach.

A final decision is expected imminently to ensure the Dragons can offer prospective recruits an answer on the identity of their 2021 coach as soon as possible.

After a tumultuous first four months as CEO, Webb has also made revitalising the Dragons' identity a key strategic goal.

The joint-venture club has been roundly criticised in recent times for its handling of McGregor's final seasons, with a split along traditional St George and Illawarra factional lines emerging amid a two-year slide down the ladder.

Webb came to the high-pressure role with no ties to either side of the joint-venture, but has 15 years of experience across commercial and marketing roles in the AFL and NRL.

With St George's 100-year anniversary on the horizon in 2021, and Illawarra's own 40-year landmark coming the following season, Webb has flagged greater acknowledgement of history from both clubs.

"Our priority is to understand who we are and what we want to be now," Webb told NRL.com.

"I don't think it's as clear as what it has been in the past. We need to define our identity really clearly. We need to embrace both foundation clubs.

furner-d-191119101sm.jpg

Knights assistant coach David Furner. :copyright:Shane Myers/NRL Photos
"It feels like we sometimes hold back on embracing the past because we don't want to upset people on either side. By doing that we end up not pleasing anyone because we don't do anything.

"It's in our blood. We wear that Red V and we sing the same song, and we've got all these players coming out of the Illawarra. It's in our blood. That history is us so it should be everywhere.

"It needs focus and attention. And yes, it will need somewhat awkward conversations, things spoken out loud."

Wayne Bennett's premiership-winning, three-year stint a decade ago is the one and only time a coach without significant links to either the Steelers or Saints has taken the St George Illawarra post.

However Young, who significantly boasts Bennett's endorsement, offers a bridge of sorts between the two foundation clubs as the son of Dragons great Craig Young, a Steelers junior and 2010 title winner with the merged entity.

Griffin and Furner meanwhile offer obvious alternatives to critics who argue a coach without any association is what the club needs.

A call on assistant coach Shane Flanagan's future can only be made once a head coach is installed, but Webb is hopeful a 12-month extension can be negotiated beyond November.

Phil Gould's oft-cited review of the Dragons' set-up last year came with the concerning caveat that the club could not afford to implement several of his recommendations.

Webb took issue with the "misconception that this club doesn't have money," and insisted the backing of St George Leagues Club and WIN Corporation meant their incoming coach could count on the "right resources" being provided to the football department.

Their soon to be completed strategic plan won't call out a specific on-field goal but wants to generate a distinct defence-based game fans can have faith in at the very least.

"[Interim coach] Dean Young spoke to this, that fans and members will at least know what they're going to get when they run out on the field," Webb said.

"That's the easiest measure of success I think. And we don't have that right now.

"We need to get there and we do that with the right appointment of coach, the right support structures through the organisation and making sure they've got the resources right to do their job.

"We need to give the football department every chance to win games."

Dragons to keep Jack de Belin pending star lock's court matter as club denies Bent Hunt release talks

Written By Ed Chisholm

The Dragons have announced an agreement in principle has been reached over Jack de Belin's retention while also denying rumours Ben Hunt would depart the club at the end of this season.

In a major roster coup the club has warded off an enticing offer for de Belin from the New Zealand Warriors, despite the former NSW Blues star not having played an NRL game in nearly two years.

The 29-year-old, who is due to come off contract at the conclusion of this season, has been suspended under the NRL's no-fault stand down policy since January 2019 as he stands accused of sexual assault.

De Belin is due to face trial in November after failing in pre-trial arguments to have the charges stood down last week.

He hasn't played a game since the Dragons bowed out of the finals in September 2018, however de Belin has remained on the club's payroll and continues to train with the squad full-time.

While de Belin fielded a big-money offer from the Warriors for next season, reportedly worth $3 million, the Dragons confirmed on Wednesday de Belin would remain in the Red V, pending his trial result.

"The Dragons can confirm that de Belin has agreed in principle to re-sign with the Dragons beyond the 2020 season, pending the outcome of his imminent court matter," a club statement said.

"The terms of de Belin's contract will remain confidential while the matter remains before the court."

Confirming de Belin's retention if cleared in court, St. George Illawarra also addressed reports suggesting the club was looking to offload representative halfback Ben Hunt in the off-season.

Hunt's future has been the subject of widespread conjecture all season.

Having been shifted between multiple positions but used primarily at hooker this season, Hunt has been vocal about his desire to play halfback, despite the Dragons' intentions to use him at dummy-half.

The Daily Telegraph first reported the Broncos and Dragons had held talks about splitting Hunt's $1.2 million salary to end his stay in the Red V and facilitate a move home to Brisbane.

But the club firmly denied Hunt was on the move, after Hunt himself distanced himself from an early departure on Wednesday.

"St George Illawarra wish to also clarify that conjecture over Ben Hunt's future at the Red V is completely inaccurate," the statement said.

"The Dragons' recruitment committee have never discussed the prospect of releasing the Queensland and Australia representative to another club.

"Hunt remains contracted to the Red V until at least the end of the 2023 season."

The crucial roster update comes as the Dragons' narrow down their search for a new head coach following the parting of ways with Paul McGregor a fortnight ago.

It's reported the board are holding interviews this week, with former Panthers and Broncos coach Anthony Griffin understood to be the front runner.

Current caretaker Dean Young, who was part of Wayne Bennett's 2010 premiership-winning side, is also being considered.

I think if the there was even close to an equivalent forward on the market we would consider going in that direction. There isn’t though and he’s by far the best forward available on the market. He’s worth the risk for me, if he gets cleared we basically have acquired an origin forward in a position we are sorely missing. We don’t see what goes on behind closed doors nor were we with him the night of the alleged event. The fact half the team were, plus Ryan Webb a new CEO from outside still is sticking with him suggests they believe he will be cleared.

This part of your post is very true, and thanks for noting something that too many people have missed.

It's important to remember that 'we' know nothing about what happened, or even the postcode people were located in. It is up to the court to reveal the facts in due course. Not us.

NRL: St George Illawarra players welcome Jack de Belin’s potential contract extension
Dragons players believe Jack de Belin would “dominate” if he is given clearance to return to the NRL next season.

St George Illawarra players have welcomed Jack de Belin’s contract extension pending his court case, declaring he is still a world class player who would “dominate” if he returned to the NRL next season.

De Belin’s challenging career received a boost during the week when the Dragons announced that the former NSW Origin forward had agreed in principle to a new contract beyond the 2020 season.

The potential extension comes only a week after it was determined that his alleged aggravated sexual assault case would proceed to trial, set for November.

De Belin hasn’t played for two years after being stood down under the NRL’s ‘no fault’ stand down policy, but his teammates believe he would excel if given clearance to return.

Halfback Adam Clune has no doubts that the Cootamundra-born forward would star in the NRL again after seeing him perform strongly at training.

“Yeah, he (Jack) is going unreal,” Clune said.

“It is a credit to him the way he has been able to apply himself, not just the last 12 months, but the last two years.

“If we can get Jack back on the field next year, it would be unreal. He is a world class player and he would make a massive difference to the team.

“I have no doubt that he will be able to go out there and dominate.

“He is still one of the top players in the game if he was able to get out there and put some product on the field and I have total belief that he would be able to get the job done.”

Dragons fullback Matt Dufty is also keen to have de Belin back in the team.

“We’ve obviously missed him a lot this year,” Dufty said.

“He is one of those forwards who can force an error and change the momentum in a game.”

Its a hard one , is Jack innocent or guilty ? There must be enough evidence to go to trial ..... If he is found innocent the guy had been put through hell and may never be the same player ..... Can he if he gets off go after the NRL ????

Haz, so far we’ve heard media reporting on the charges and what’s been mentioned in court.

Sounds really bad.

I suggested early on (seems so long ago) that the less said on here until it’s dealt with the better. Also said the truth will be somewhere in between the prosecution version and defence version, we may never know the truth such is our legal system. Either way we will hear a lot more of each version during the trial.

I’m glad he didn’t beat the charges on legal argument last week because I don’t want to cheer for a guy that got off such serious charges on a technicality without a jury hearing both sides (even if we don’t hear it all).

I would comfortably cheer him playing for us if found not guilty, depending on the rest of the story that comes out during the trial.

I miss his presence in our team, on the field and as young Dufty said;

“He is one of those forwards who can force an error and change the momentum in a game.”

I miss that big time.

Look forward to the trial, hope it’s speedy and fair for all parties and if either side is wrong or have lied I hope it’s made very public.

Reserve my judgement until we can be better informed.
