James Gavet's chances of finally getting his NRL career properly underway are closer to becoming a reality at the Warriors.
The 26-year-old prop, who came through the Warriors system, has played just 14 NRL games, in a career blighted by injuries and off-field issues.
He was released early at the end of last year from his contract at the Broncos and his career seemed to have hit a roadblock.
But he was given a chance to prove himself in the Warriors' NSW Cup training squad and was recently promoted to train with the first-grade team.
Warriors coach Andrew McFadden says he's been impressed with Gavet's commitment and professionalism at training.
"He's on a trial basis at the moment, but he's going really well and I'm really happy with what he's doing," McFadden said.
"He's had to work on some stuff off the field but he's doing all of the right things and I've been really impressed with his focus at training, so I'm pretty optimistic about his future here."
Gavet began his career with the Warriors but never broke into first grade, with questions raised about his attitude and the type of people he was mixing with in Auckland.
But his talent was never in doubt and he was Des Hasler's first signing when he took over at the Bulldogs in 2012.
However, an ankle injury and an inability to regularly get to training on time tried the patience of the two-time premiership-winning coach and he was offloaded to the Tigers after only one appearance for the Bulldogs.
He missed most of the 2013 season with a foot injury and was let go after the 2014 season, moving to the Broncos. But Gavet ruptured his ACL at training before the Broncos' round three game against the Cowboys in 2015, needing a knee reconstruction.
Given his past, there was some caution at the Warriors about getting involved with Gavet again but McFadden said he's been impressed.
"Physically and professionally at the moment he's doing everything right," McFadden said.
"He's got to do a bit more time there, but we're certainly committed to helping him and supporting him through that."
The Warriors want to add one further prop to their squad and a decision on whether to offer Gavet a contract will be made in the next few weeks.
