Jamie Lyon to retire at end of 2016 season

Would have given anything to see him in the Tigers jumper.

Yeah, he dodged origin and split on Parra but as a player he's definitely one of the best of his generation.

Funny juxtaposition between Parra and Manly fans in this thread and the Foran thread.

There's a huge difference between what Killer did and the way Foran left though. Lyon deserved to be hated by Eels fans at the time.

That said I don't hold what a dumb kid did 12 years ago against him. Great player and good luck to him

Didn't say there wasn't, I just find it funny.

One of the best? No chance when you cat out of putting your reputation on the line in the toughest arena around

Good club player though

100% this. Doesn't matter if it's just an exhibition match (it's not) you don't get to be placed among the best if you pussed out at the highest level.

If the story I've heard of why he left is true he had every right to and Parra fans should direct their anger at club management and the coach in particular

Regardless, what happened in his personal life at the time is hell to go through and you can't blame him for wanting to get back to his family and out of the spotlight

Name something he didn't win as a player?
The only thing i can think of is a world cup, but the guy he's most often compared to for the best centre of his time, justin Hodges, didn't win that either

There have been many better centres in his time.
Still a great player. Watching run into a hole was awesome. He had such great speed. With a great running style. His,speed stayed with him long term as well.
His origin no mas is a glaring blight though.
Top class club player. That's it.
And far from the best since the 90s like has been posted

Wrong . . . best in his time easily on average

He wanted to play Origin on his return from England but a below par performance wasn't forgiven by f**kwit Newsouthwelshmen, unlike Qld who stand by their players they claimed the bloke didn't have the right to return from ESL and step into Origin. As a result Lyon stood by his word, like he did against the Parra coach and refused to play Origin again

If he was a Qld'er he'd still be playing Origin

Nah pops.
He did nothing at origin level.
Nothing.
So to be considered the best of his time is just foolish.
Do you really believe he was a better centre than inglis?
You're kidding yourself if you do old buddy.
Hodges was also better.
Taking your ball and not playing is pretty weak imo

Bullshit, if Lyon was playing for Qld he would've been the first Centre picked. Inglis would've been his partner because what he did was spectacular but he couldn't come within a bull's roar of Jamie's intensity and even at his best couldn't match the bloke's 80 minutes . . . Bellamy wouldn't waste his time using Inglis the way he's being used at Souths and he's almost f**ked in Maroon because of it

Thanks for offering the use of your eyes and knowledge of the game ol' mate but I'll stick with mine until the fat lady sings. Most of the wankers that will be taking the Lyon piss will the same that were begging him to play Origin and save the rabble he would be playing with

Well played, sir. It is the right decision.

There is not another centre I would have wanted. Great captain as well. I hope he gets to 300. He deserves to be in that class.

Great player.
Best of his time?
No.
How can you say he was the best when he didn't perform at origin level in any way.
Maybe he could have but we'll never know.
You're just guessing and that doesn't make it true.

Origin isn't the be all to end all. To have his consistency and brilliance week after week, season after season in the NRL is an accurate measure of where you are at. I'm with pops, he was one of the best.

He should be booted in to the nrl wilderness after his disgraceful dive tonight. Absolutely pathetic.
