if anything he's probably helped himself with regard to long term legacy by not playing.

he largely missed a period of origin domination where extremely few players from NSW came out with any credit.

hayne
gallen - to an extent, though everyone thinks he's a shit captain

...struggling after that point.

if he had of played in most of the series, and got flogged like the rest of them, i wonder whether his "best centre of the decade" would still apply.

Fair points Moggy

Made setting up his outside man look like a piece of piss, not an "athlete" but a proper footballer.

Pretty quiet off the field so wont be seeing much of him post-retirement you'd imagine.

Basically what I was going to say. There aren't many of them anymore.

Great footy player for his club, may have made the difference in losing tight games in 2011/12/13 SOO series for the Blues. Fantastic career though.

Good riddance to the scumbag. Good player. Excrement human being and one I won't miss. My most hated player by a fair margin.

IMO, he's starting to look like a guy that has played a season too long, capable of the occasional flash of brilliance but mostly a passenger.

Hodges was the same.

This. I've felt he's looked downright ordinary for most of the season. He's had a great career though - an absolute gun centre.

Enjoyed watching him play and he has clearly put sand in El dribblers vag so that has moved him up a notch or two in my books lol

Was there anything more behind not playing rep footy, did he fall out with someone at ARL/NSWRL level? It is very unusual for a player to not want to play at rep level.

Reckons he copped unfair criticism for strolling straight back into rep teams when he came back from England.
He returned in 07 and probably saw the writing on the wall.

That statement says a lot more about you than it does Lyon. Of all the arseholes that have played Rugby League and Jamie Lyon's your most hated? You must be a right old prick.

MANLY skipper Jamie Lyon has shocked the rugby league world by announcing he would retire after this season.

Would hardly call it a shock.

I'm sure he'll look back fondly on his achievements.

Read the play well and made things look so easy at times.
Most centres now are just athletes. I wonder if they'll be more footballer types like him soon.

Lyon's a great centre, and certainly brings out the best in nuffy wingers, and the worst in some sad f**k nuffy posters

Agreed. It's like expressing shock at the news the Queen Mother died.

Anyway, as has been said, he was a footballer rather than an athlete. A rare breed these days.

Consistently one of the best centres of the last 10 years. Will never forgive him for not playing Origin when his state needed him. He could have been the difference. We'll never know. Pea-heart.

Great career Killer, hopefully your team mates can send you out the winner that you are.

I find laughable the hate for Jamie, at least he didn't bag the shit outta parra when he left.
Yet these same hypocrites were happy to have watmough after he bagged the f**k out of Manly.
