Jamie Lyon wins Man of Steel

Jamie Lyon has tonight been awarded the Super League Man of Steel award, for his outstanding debut season with St Helens. Others nominated included Kevin Sinfield of Leeds and Jamie Peacock of Bradford.

Lyon for me was as clear a winner as it could be. Such a shame that events conspired against Saints in the run up to the Play Offs to deny Lyon the chance to entertain us all in the Final.

Richard Whiting was a surprise winner of the Young Player of the Year award, beating James Roby of St Helens and Harrisen Hansen of Wigan.

And also on LU's front page...

I thought maybe Saints recent run of home losses may have lessened Jamie's chance of winning, but it's an award for the whole season, and his (and Saints) efforts should be recognised. Having seen Jamie's best years at Parramatta, I can honestly say/admit that his skill level seems higher now, what with a kicking game we never knew he had, and the abilities he showed during times he was moved to stand off.

Whiting had a few very good games in the late part of the season for Hull, but before that I hadn't really noticed him much. Should prove good value in coming years as he develops more and more.
